For my second Half Pi Shawl I used a locally produced yarn from Pembrokeshire Alpacas who are based in Solva and dyed it in a vibrant seaweed green. This yarn is a is a 2-ply light DK but really but any yarn could be used for this project from laceweight upwards so it is very versatile. I designed the lace patterning to represent the coastal flora and fauna that we have here in abundance, many of our local beaches are Sites of Special Scientific Interest and have their own unique species. MATERIALS: I used 100 grams x 350 metres of the lightweight DK yarn mentioned overleaf however the choice is yours as to which yarn you use, as this pattern will easily adapt and will knit well with both sockweight and lace weight yarns (although you may have to adjust the metreage up or down depending on the weight of the yarn).
NOTIONS
1 circular 5.50 mm needle of at least 24 inches in length; Stitch Markers (if using): 1 tapestry needle to darn in any loose ends. TOP TIP: If like me, you hate using circular needles it is possible to knit this garment using longer length straight needles.
Tension/Gauge
This is largely unimportant as you garment will be blocked to achieve the necessary size but it should be around 4.5 sts and 4 rows per inch worked in stocking stitch. The finished garment will measure approx 60 inches in length and 20 inches in depth.
Abbreviations
M1 = Make 1 - insert right hand needle from front to back under the horizontal strand that runs between the stitches on the right and left hand needles and knit into the back of this loop. SK2P = Slip the next stitch knitwise, knit the next 2 sts together then pass the slipped stitches over this stitch. Ssk = slip the next 2 stitches knitwise onto the right hand needle, insert left hand needle back into the stitches, knit the two together. (2 stitches become one and this makes a left slanting decrease). yo = yarn over needle wyifsl1p = with yarn to the front as if to purl slip one stitch purlways Other Abbreviations are given in the Chart provided.
Method:
Using 5.5 mm needles and cable cast on method, cast on 3 stitches. You can use a provisional cast on here if you wish but I didn't bother to do this. Knit 6 rows of garter stitch. Row 1: Turn your work through 90° and pick up and knit 3 stitches through the 3 garter loops along the side of the work you've just knitted. Turn 90°again and knit 3 more stitches from your cast on edge. 9 sts in total. Row 2: Wyif sllp, k2, place marker if desired, purl 3, place marker if desired, k3. FROM HERE ON I WON'T MENTION THE 3 STS EITHER SIDE THAT FORM THE GARTER STITCH BORDER, JUST THE CENTRE STITCHES. REMEMBER AT THE BEGINNING OF EVERY ROW TO PERFORM WYIF SL1P TO GIVE A NICE LOOPED EDGE. Row 3: Yo, kfb, yo, k1, yo, kfb, yo (9 sts) Rows 4-8: Work in stocking stitch i.e. one row purl one row knit. Row 9: (yo, k1) 9 times, yo (19 sts) Rows 10 to 16: Work in stocking stitch Row 17: (yo,k1) 19 times, yo (39 sts) Row 18: Purl Row 19: Knit 19 sts. M1, knit to end (40 sts) Rows 20: Purl Row 21-30 - Work the two row Eight Stitch Razor Shell Rib Lace from Chart A a total of 5 times. Rows: 31: Knit 20 sts, knit 2 tog, knit to end (39 sts). Rows: 32: Purl Row: 33: (yo, k1) 39 times, yo (79 sts) Row 34: Purl Row 35: Knit 39 sts, M1, knit to end (80 sts) Row 36: Purl Rows: 37 to 68: Work the 8 row Seaweed Stitch from Chart B at total of four times. Row 69: Knit 39 sts, knit 2 tog, knit to the end (79 sts) Row 70: Purl Row71: (yo, k1) 79 times, yo (159 sts) Row 72: Purl Row 73: Knit 79 sts, M1, knit to end (160 sts) Row 74: Purl Rows 75-134: Work Limpets & Cockleshell Lace from Chart C five times. Cast off using stretchy lace cast off as follows:- 1) K1 tbl, 2) K1, insert tip of left hand needle from back to front through the front loops of both stitches on the right needle so as to knit them together through the back loops. 3) K1 tbl, then repeat point 2 again until all the stitches have been cast off. Block and press to given dimensions, when blocking bottom edge pick out centre eyelet points to form into "points" to give a scalloped edge. Sew in loose ends. My grateful thanks go to Christine Robbins who took on the challenge to test knit this pattern for me and correct my howling errors. Christine has a wide range of shawls, wraps and scarves that she will knit for you and you can reach her via her website http://wrapped-in-colour.org.uk.
