1. Introduction
Hello, this is IM4MAN. This pattern is very dear to me: I wanted to make something for my future niece/nephew and thought of a little fox hat. Unfortunately I only found patterns that didn't suit my needs (crochet instructions, etc. )so I thought that I would make my own. And by “make my own", I mean that I had a look at a pattern for a hat for a newborn and the Fantastic Mr Fox hat. And then I did some modifying and there it was - the baby fox hat. Many thanks to Faye Newport for her pattern and to Nona for the hat pattern. My niece/nephew isn't born yet, but I hope that he/she will like it. I contacted both designers to get permission to use their instructions in this pattern. Since I didn't hear anything back from Nona who designed a basic newborn hat, I won't include the instructions here, but give you a link to the pattern I used. 2. Requirements You need: yarn: type ..Sport according to http://www.craftyarncouncil.com/weight.html - One skein of orange one skein of white Iam 4MAN Designs: Baby Fox Hat - Oone skein of black → you won't use up a full skein, you only need a few scraps of white and black for the ears You need: needles one set of dpns, size 3,5 mm one sewing needle
You need: techniques
knitting in the round 2x2 ribbing decreasing by knitting two stitches together decreasing by slip-slip-knit some sewing skills → very, very basic sewing skills; I know nothing of sewing except for how not to poke myself with the needle and I managed just fine 3. Instructions
Hat:
I did not get permission to post the pattern for the version I used, but here's a link to the pattern I did use: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/welcome-to-the-world-newborn-hat I'm sure any basic hat pattern for newborn/babies will suffice though. Ears You have to work this pattern 4-times; two times version A, two times version B Version A: Cast on 12 stitches in orange Knit one row Purl one row K1 ssk k6 k2tog k1 → you will now have 10 stitches remaining Purl one row Knit one row Purl one row K1 ssk k4 k2tog k1 → you will now have 8 stitches remaining Purl one row Knit one row Purl knit row K1 ssk k2 k2tog k1 →> you will now have 6 stitches remaining Change color to black Purl one row Knit one row Purl one row K1 ssk k2tog k1 → you will now have 4 stitches remaining Iam 4MAN Designs: Baby Fox Hat Purl one row Knit one row Purl one row Ssk k2tog → you will now have 2 stitches remaining Cast off → I like to cast off using a rather long tail so I can use the yarn to sew together the two parts of the ear, so you might want to do that as well. Weave in ends
Version B:
Cast on 12 stitches in white Knit one row Purl one row K1 ssk k6 k2tog k1 → you will now have 10 stitches remaining Purl one row Knit one row Purl one row K1 ssk k4 k2tog k1 → you will now have 8 stitches remaining Purl one row Knit one row Purl knit row K1 ssk k2 k2tog k1 →> you will now have 6 stitches remaining Purl one row Knit one row Purl one row K1 ssk k2tog k1 → you will now have 4 stitches remaining Purl one row Knit one row Purl one row Ssk k2tog → you will now have 2 stitches remaining Cast off Weave in ends Now for the sewing part: Line up the ear-parts; you need to sew them together (that's where the long cast-off tail comes in handy; just use the black yarn for the tips of the ears and orange for the rest). You can fill the ears if you want; it's not necessary, but it looks good. I used scrap yarn for filling, but I have no idea about sewing or filling and the like: if you have better alternatives, use those. Now you need to sew the ears to the hat. Watch out that you place them symmetrically And here's your little fox hat! Iam 4MAN Designs: Baby Fox Hat 4. Trivia, Tips and more Thanks to Faye Newport http://www.ravelry.com/designers/faye-newport and her Fantastic Mr Fox http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/fantastic-mr-fox pattern for the basis of the ears. Thanks to Nona http://www.ravelry.com/designers/nona and her Welcome to the World Newborn Hat http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/welcome-to-the-world-newborn-hat pattern for the basis of the hat. Edit: This pattern was written in the summer of 2011, so my niece was born. She's lovely, adorable and I love her to death. And, mostly to annoy my brother aka her dad, I made an adult-sized version of the hat, too, and will force him to wear it. Go to my ravelry page for the pattern for the adult hat.
