Swinging Lace Shawl Pattern: Adjustable, Customizable, and Soft Knitting Project with Flexibility

Swinging Lace :

It's warm, cozy and the best part: it stays the way you put it without extra help of shawl pins. Plus: huge flexibility This shawl is adjustable to a neck warmer, scarf or whatever you like it to be. - Choose and change colors for every rectangle as you like - Change the size of your rectangles

This is what you will need:

Needle size:

About the size your yarn calls for, then the stockinette stitch will look best.

Stitch markers:

One for the beginning of each stockinette stitch rectangle.

Yarn:

Any yarn will work, I used Schoppel Zauberwolle in 'Fuchsienbeet'. I would recommend a soft yarn your skin likes. It will look very pretty in a plain colored yarn, too. Gauge is not really important. My border stitch number is 3, but you can easily make it more or less, as you like it.

Abbreviations:

cO = cast on BO = bind off k = knit p = purl RS = right side WS = wrong side yo = yarn over, as if to get the thread when you knit pass = slip one as if to knit, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over the knitted one. (2 stitches necessary) knit = knit all stitches until other instructions purl = purl all stitches until other instructions k2tog = knit two stitches together kfb = knit into the front (RS) and back (WS) of the stitch pfb = purl into the front (RS) an d back (WS) of the stitch

Pattern help and ideas:

> Lace pattern repeat: [pass, yo k1] Lace pattern body (increasing): RS: yo, [pass, yo, k1], k3 WS: k3, purl RS: yo, knit, k3 WS: k3, purl Increases: Yo in the beginning of every RS row right after the border, later also kfb. RS - borders: k3, , k3 Ws - borders: k3, ..., k3 Flexible width of every rectangle, although I recommend sticking to the same size with every rectangle. Shaping: see picture no.2 on this page Stockinette shaping: yo, knit, pass Lace shaping: yo, [pass, yo, k1], k2tog, k2 Be careful about the last rectangle and the belonging part of the lace rectangle, they look different than the before. Don't be afraid of the way it looks, it will make sure you garment stays, where you want it to be and it won't be seen when wearing. If you like, you can change the lace pattern, but I recommend choosing one which shows the swinging character of this pattern. Stockinette stitch is not necessary, but I think it looks and brings out the swinging character the best.

Instructions:

> CO 6 stitches (2 times the number of border stitches) > Knit 6 rows, place marker in the middle, then start lace body > Increasing: every RS, yo after border. As soon, as you have enough stitches for the Lace pattern [pass, yo, k1], start it. Continue until you have the width you wish for. I stopped when I had 11 Lace repeats. > Start new rectangle (stockinette stitch): WS: pfb into (last/increase) yo, place marker in between these two stitches RS and other Ws: follow pattern instructions Start Lace shaping: RS - continue with yo's, k2tog, k2 instead of k3, no increase, but swinging character > Start further rectangles: Similar to the first stockinette stitch rectangle, start shaping of the previous rectangle Every RS of old rectangles: yo, knit, pass Every wS: purl > Last rectangle, difference: First RS: follow pattern, as before Further RS increases: yo, kfb, Extra decrease in lace rectangle. Depending on your (Lace) pattern: pass, no yo or k2tog before the usual k2tog, k2. Continue until there's only one Lace-hole left. You want it to look as similar to the beginning as possible. Knit one last RS, then start with your last border: > 5 rows of garter stitch, beginning with a Ws. Still continuing with the increases and decreases in the beginning and end. Stop with the shaping (yo, knit, pass) in the center rectangles (-> knit).

ecommend blocking the item to make the lace part prettier, but it's not necessar I did not wash it with a detergent, I took a good (all natural) hair conditioner (mixed with a little oil), just about as much as you would use on Bra Strap Length (BSL ;-) ) hair. Soak the garment in water mixed up with the conditioner and let it rest there for about 30 minutes. After that, rinse it well and find a nice place for drying. Be careful with the stockinette stitch, you don't want it to be stretched too much. This way of blocking will make your knitted item extra soft. But it will probably only work with pure wool and not with cotton, etc.
