Heel flap is worked back and forth. row 1 (wrong side): slip 1, p.0 (1) tbl, $\ast\mathsf{k1}$ P1 tbl1; repeat from \* to last 2 (1) stitches, k1(0) , p1 (1). row 2: slip 1, k 0 (1) tbl, \*p1, k1 tbl; repeat from \* across to last 2 (1) stitches, p1 (0), k1 (1). row 1 (wrong side): slip 1, p 19 (23), p2tog, p1, turn row 2: slip 1, k8 (10), ssk, k1, turn row 3: slip 1, p9 (11), p2tog, p1, turn row 4: slip 1, k10 (12), ssk, k1, turn Continue working one more stitch until all the stitches have been worked. You should end on a knit row with 21 (25) stitches remaining. Do not turn work. Begin gusset. Gusset: Pick up and knit one stitch in each slipped stitch along side of heel. Place marker for gusset. Knit 37 (43) instep stitches in pattern stitch for instep. Place marker for gusset. Pick up and knit same number of stitches along remaining side of heel. Knit 10 (12) stitches and place marker. The beginning of the round is now the middle of the heel flap note: Due to the nature of the heel flap, there are fewer gusset stitches than usual for the length of the heel flap. In order to compensate for this, you will be knitting more "plain" rounds between gusset decreases.

Gusset decreases:

Round 1: Knit to first marker. Slip marker, k 0 (3), work 37 instep stitches in pattern as established, k 0 (3) to next marker. Slip marker, knit to end of round. Round 2 (decrease round): Knit to last 3 stitches before first marker, k2tog, k1. Slip marker, k 0 (3), work 37 instep stitches in pattern as established, k 0 (3) to next marker. Slip marker, k1, ssk, knit to end of round. [Work round 1 twice, work round 2 (decrease round) once] five times. Then repeat [round 1 once, round 2 once] only until 68 sts remain. 37 (43) instep sts/31 (37) sole sts. Foot: Continue working pattern as established until foot is approximately 2 1/4 inches less than desired foot length; ending on round 7 of pattern stitch for instep. Set-up round for toe: Knit to first marker. Slip marker, k 0 (3), ssk, [k9, s2k1p2] twice, k9, k2tog, k 0 (3). Slip marker, knit to end of round. 31 (37) instep sts/31 (37) sole sts. Knit even until foot is $\underline{{{1}}}\ 3/4$ inches less than desired foot length.

Round 1 (decrease round): knit to last 3 stitches before first marker, k2tog, k1. Slip marker, k1, ssk, knit across to last 3 stitches before second marker, k2tog, k1. Slip marker, k1, ssk, knit to end.
