100 gm fingering weight sock yarn US size 1.5 (2.5 mm) knitting needles or to knit to gauge 41 size 8/0 beads (same color as yarn or with very subtle contrast) Small crochet hook or Oral B Super Flosser for beads Stitch markers TapestryNeedle
Notes:
When more than one number is given, the first applies to the medium and the second to the large. The size of the sock can be adjusted by using a smaller or larger needle for a different gauge. To attach bead using a crochet hook: You will need a small hook that will fit through bead hole: When you reach the stitch for BEAD, slidebeadontoshaftofcrochethook.With yarn held in back, slip st off needle and catch with crochet hook. Slide bead onto stitch, slip back onto left hand needle, then knit. The bead is now attached. Abbreviations:
PM/sM - Place/Slip marker. slip - slip 1 as if to purl, unless otherwise stated. yo - yarn-over. bead - Place bead. CDD (Central Double Decrease) - Slip first and second stitches together as if to knit. Knit 1 stitch. Pass two slipped stitches over the knit stitch. k1tbl/p1tbl - knit/purl 1 stitch through back loop. k2tog/p2tog - knit/purl 2 stitches together. ssk - slip 1 stitch as if to knit, slip another stitch as if to purl. Insert left needle through the front loops of the two slipped stitches and knit them together. LT (Left Twist) - slip 1 stitch knitwise, slip 1 stitch knitwise. Place both stitches back onto left hand needle (LHN). Skip the first stitch and knit into the back of the second, then knit BOTH stitches together through the back of the loop. RT (Right Twist) - Knit both stitches together, leaving them on the LHN. Knit the first stitch again. s1k2p (sl1 k2tog psso) - slip 1 stitch knitwise, knit 2 stitches together, pass slipped stitch over.
Instructions
Cuff: Using the German Twisted Cast-On, loosely cast on 66 (74) sts. Join, being careful not to twist the stitches. Place marker to indicate beginning of round. Work Rounds 1-11 of Chart A once. Chart A is worked twice per round. Leg: Work rounds 1-12 of Chart B 6 times or until leg is desired length; ending on round 12. On last round, work 33 (37) sts in pattern; PM to indicate start of instep; work 33 (37) sts in pattern; PM to indicate end of instep. Chart B is worked twice per round. The Secret Fan chart is used to replace any one Chart B repeat of the knitter's choice. The fan chart begins on Row 12 of the previous Chart B. Please note that the first repeat of Chart B per round is the back of the leg. Heel: will be worked over 33 (37) sts. Place 33 (37) instep stitches on holder. Heel flap is worked back and forth. Heel is a center panel of traditional slipped stitches, flanked on each side by Eye of Partridge. Work rows 1- 4 of Chart C until heel flap is 2 3/8 inches or desired length ending on row 1 or 3.
Turn heel:
row 1 (WS): k1tbl, p19 (21), p2tog, p1; turn. row 2: slip 1, k8 (8) ssk, k1; turn. row 3: slip 1, p9 (9), p2tog, p1; turn. row 4: slip 1, k10 (10), ssk, k1; turn. Continue working one more stitch until all the stitches have been worked. There should be 21 (23) stitches remaining. Do not turn. Gusset: Gusset decreases are worked on the bottom of the sock. For tutorial, please see turtlegirl76's blog post here. Pick up and knit one stitch in each slipped stitch along side of heel. PM to indicate start of instep. Work 33 (37) instep sts in Chart B as established.PM to indicate end of instep and new beginning of round. Pick up and knit same number of stitches along remaining side of heel. For an extra challenge, you might try using this technique to pick up your gusset stitches (un-vented by brentusfirmus) as shown here. It makes a nice border to the heel flap. Round 1: Knit to last 14 (16) sts before first instep marker, PM to indicate end of gusset. Knit to first instep marker. Work 33 (37) instep stitches in Chart B as established. SM. Round 2 (decrease round): K14 (16): PM to indicate start of gusset. SM; ssk, knit to last 2 sts before second gusset marker, k2tog. Knit to first instep marker. Work instep sts in Chart B as established. Round 3: Knit even to first instep marker. Work instep in Chart B as established. Repeat Rounds 2-3 until 64 (72) stitches remain. There will be 3 sts remaining between the markers for the gusset. Remove markers for gusset. 33 (37) instep sts/31 (35) sole sts Foot: Continue working as established (pattern stitches on instep and stockinette on the sole) until foot is approximately 3 1/2 - 4 inches less than desired foot length, ending on Row 12 of Chart B. Work instep in rows 1-8 of Chart D once. Work instep in rows 9-12 only of Chart D until foot measures 1 3/4 (2) inches less than desired foot length. Set-up for toe: Knit to first instep marker. Work first 5 (7) sts in pattern as established. ssk, knit to last 7 (9) sts before second instep marker, k2tog, work 5 (7) sts in pattern as established. 31 (35) instep sts/ 31 (35) sole sts.
Toe:
Knit 3 rounds even (working instep in pattern as established). [Work decrease round once, knit 2 rounds even (working instep in pattern as established)] twice. [Work decrease round once, knit 1 round even (working instep in pattern as established)] 3 times. Work decrease round only until 26 (34) sts remain. Decrease round: k1, ssk, knit to last 3 stitches before first instep marker, k2tog, k1. SM. Work first 5 (7) sts in pattern as established. ssk, knit to last 7 (9) sts before second instep marker, k2tog, work 5 (7) sts in pattern as established.
Medium:
Round 1: k1, ssk, knit to last 3 stitches before first instep marker, k2tog, k1. SM. Work first 5 sts in pattern as established, s1k2p, work 5 sts in pattern as established. 11 sts instep/11 sts sole Round 2:k
Large:
instep marker, k2tog, k1. SM. Work 7 sts in pattern as established; s1k2p; work 7 sts in pattern as established. Round 2: k1, ssk, knit to last 3 stitches before first instep marker, k2tog, k1. SM. K3, k2tog, k5, ssk, k3. 13 sts instep/13 sts sole. Round 1: k1, ssk, knit to last 3 stitches before first Use Kitchener stitch to graft toes. Weave in all loose ends.
