Flesberg Slouchy Stranded Hat Knitting Pattern with Traditional Norwegian Motif

FLESBERG

Pattern illustration

Flesberg is a slouchy stranded hat knit in the round. The motif is inspired by a pair of traditional wristlets from the region of Flesberg in Norway. The hat starts with a simple ribbed brim, which flows into plain stockinette stitch. A simple charted pattern is knit throughout and ends with a new plain stockinette stitch section. The hat is then finished by simple decreases evenly spaced, and a pompom is sewn on top. This pattern is suitable for an intermediate knitter knowing how to knit stranded in the round, or for an adventurous beginner. It does not explain the technique of stranded knitting, nor does it explain the use of chart, but no need to be an expert to enjoy knitting this hat.

INSTRUCTIONS :

Ribbed brim:

With MC, CO loosely 108 (114) stitches (Norwegian CO). Place marker and join in the round, being careful not to twist the stitches. Knit ribbed brim \*K1, P1\* until end of round for 5 cm (15 rds). On following round, slip the knit stitches as if to purl from left hand needle to right hand needle and knit the purls. On next round, increase as following: \*K18 (K19), M1L\*. Repeat until end of round (114 (120) stitches). Then, knit 2 rows plain stockinette stitch.

Stranded motif:

it might be useful to change one needle size up (3.75mm) to assure the same gauge as the plain stockinettest. Join in the CC, and start knitting the chart. Wrap the yarn approx. every five to six stitches on rows with too long floats. Be careful to even out your knitting on the right hand needle as you go. This allows for a more regular tension. After finishing the chart, knit stockinette stitch for 18 (22) rows in MC.

Crown decreases:

change to dpn when it is necessary. :hese two rows 11 (12) times. 8 stitches remains between markers, 48 stitches on needle Cut the yarn and pass the thread through the remaining stitches. Weave in securely.

Finitions:

With a pompom-maker, make a small pompom. Leave a string about 15 cm to sew the pompom to the top of hat. Soak and block the hat to allow the yarn to bloom and the stranded pattern to evenout. Wear with pride!
