Hat, Mitts and Cowl/Scarfe by Deborah Tomasello

Plus fingerless “keep on textin' mitts with a secret pocket knit in to hide valuables. And the cowl/scarf? Well! You can achieve a great double-knit look without the work! This pattern scratches so many knitting itches! It is worked in the round, is versatile, employs an easy-to-follow colorwork design, can be knitted any length, can be a cowl, a moebius cowl or a scarf. And, it is deceptively easy to knit! Cowl/scarf Sizes -One size fits all Hat and Mitts--Adult and teen HAT: Materials: 1 ball each of any two KnitPicks Palette: contrasting colors. Pictured: Tomato and White. One 16” #3 circular needle, four #3 DPNs (or size needed to obtain gauge), stitch marker, and tapestry Gauge: 32 stitches and 32 rounds = 4” using #3 needles. Abbreviations: K2TOG = Knit two stitches together. SSK = Slip one stitch, then slip the next. Insert left needle into the front loops of the slipped stitches and knit them together from this position. Instructions: With circular needle, CO 136 sts using Tomato. Join to work in round, placing stitch marker and being careful not to twist stitches. Knit six rounds corrugated rib (see CHART A) using White for knit sts and Tomato for purl Ssts. Increase round: (Round 1 of CHART B) Using Tomato, inc evenly to 168 sts (knit 4 sts, knit 4 make 1 around until last 4 sts, knit last 4 sts.) Follow CHART B (7 repeats per round) for 67 rounds, decreasing as indicated and switching to DPNs when necessary. Note: On round 48, you will dec from 168 to 161 sts, which is only 8 sts dec. The following dec rounds dec 16 st each dec. round. (Each dec round has 2 decreases next to each other; k2tog for first dec at beginning of chart repeat, and ssk for second each time at end of chart panel repeat.) After round 67, with 14 sts. on the needles, k2tog around. 7 sts remain. Knit last seven sts for 5 rounds; cut yarn leaving a tail several inches long. Move all sts from needles to tapestry needle, and pull tightly. Secure from the inside. Finishing: Tie and weave in or trim all color change ends. Wash and block to fit.
CHART A
Use White for knit sts and Tomato for purl sts Dash in square = purl st


MITTS:
Materials: 1 ball each of KnitPicks Palette: Tomato and White. #3 circular needle or five #3 DPNs (or size needed to obtain gauge), and tapestry needle Gauge: 32 stitches and 32 rounds = 4” using #3 needles. Abbreviations: K2TOG = Knit two stitches together. SSK = Slip one stitch, then slip the next. Insert left needle into the front loops of the slipped stitches and knit them together from this position. MITTS: Pocket: CO 20 stitches with Tomato. Knit, in stockinette, about 30 rows or 3.5 inches. End with a purl row. DO NOT Bind off, but leave long tail for sewing. Steam block. Set aside. Mitt: With DPNs, CO 60 sts ( 16 sts on each of first 3 DPNs and 12 sts on the 4"h DPN) using Tomato. Knit 2x2 rib for 16 rounds. Knitting first round: Inc 6 sts evenly. Knit 66 sts according to CHART A through round 13. Continue to follow chart, and inc for thumb as follows: To increase thumb: Round 14: m1, k1, m1 in first st (3 sts now in first st). Continue to k sts as shown around Round 15: knit all sts according to chart Round 16: m1, k3, m1, continue to k sts as shown around Round 17: knit all sts around according to chart Round 18: m1, k5, m1, continue to k sts as shown around Round 19: knit all sts around according to chart Round 20: m1, k7, m1, continue to k sts as shown around Round 21: knit all sts around according to chart Round 22: m1, k9, m1, continue to k sts as shown around Round 23: knit all sts around according to chart Round 24: m1, k11, m1, continue to k sts as shown around Round 25: knit all sts around according to chart Round 26: m1, k13, m1, continue to k sts as shown around Round 27: knit all sts around according to chart Round 28: m1, k15, m1, continue to k sts as shown around Round 29: knit all sts around according to chart Round 30: m1, k17, m1, continue to k sts as shown around Round 31: knit all sts around according to chart Round 32: m1, k19, m1, continue to k sts as shown around Round 33: knit all sts around according to chart Round 34 Move 21 thumb sts to fifth DPN (or waste yarn) to be worked as thumb later. M1 st in next st so you will be working the chart's 64 sts. Follow chart around with 64 stitches on needles. Rounds 35- 48: Knit chart.
Pocket:
Round 49: Add pocket-- Knit 6 stitches. Move next 20 sts to stitch holder. Retrieve needle with pocket stitches, and with pocket front (stockinette side) facing you, continue to knit chart with these stitches. Continue to knit chart Knit chart through round 57. Knit 2x2 rib using Tomato for 20 rounds (2.5 inches to completely cover fingers or fold back when you want fingers exposed!) BO loosely. Move 20 stitches from stitch holder to needle. Attach Tomato and knit 2x2 rib for 6 rows. Bind off. Sew rib sides to mitt, creating thepocket top.
Thumb:
Using Tomato, pick up 7 sts from body of mitten, knit 21sts on 5" DPN (split so you're working on 3 needles) for a total of 28 thumb sts. Join. Knit 2x2 rib for 16 rounds in Tomato. (or 2” to completely cover thumb, and fold back when you want thumbexposed!)Bo. Finishing: Crochet chain long enough to fit top circumference of mitt rib. Leave tails long enough to attach and tie. With tapestry needle, weave chain, loosely, through each rib at the top of mitt. Tie chain ends SECURLY in the back, weave in and trim ends. Now, when chain loop is gently tugged from other side, the mitt top will close up, creating a warm mitten. (See cover photo). Stitch pocket to mitt from the inside. Fold top cuff over pocket cuff to secure valuables. Tie and trim all yarn ends. Wash and block.
CHART A

COWL/SCARF:
Materials: Two 50 g skeins each of any two KnitPicks Palette contrasting or coordinating colors (Cover cowl uses Tomato and White). One 16” circular #3 needle, stitch markers, and tapestry needle Gauge: 32 stitches and 32 rounds = 4" using #3 needles, but gauge is unimportant here. FOR COWL: Using scrap yarn of contrasting color or a provisional CO, CO 120 st, placing one marker at the round beginning and one after the 60"h st (1/2 way). Join to beginning being careful not to twist sts. Knit 2 or 3 rounds. Detach scrap yarn and add working yarns to begin chart A. r, CO 120 st, placing marker at round beginning and another after 60\*h st (1/2 wa. Work chart A beginning with round 1as follows: knit the 30-st repeat on the right half of the chart twice, then the 30 st-repeat on the second half of the chart twice each round, for a total of 120 sts each round. Repeat rounds 21-41 as many times as you want to achieve desired length. Then knit rounds 42-61 once. For scarf, BO. For Cowl, pick up live sts of main color at beginning (then remove scrap yarn), graft to those live sts-- add one twist before grafting for a moebius cowl. Finishing: Tie and trim all yarn ends. Damp block with steam iron and damp cloth so that the piece is blocked in half, each half being the reverse of the other. Make sure edges are straight and crisp. For scarf, make and tie fringes on each end. (I recommend all Tomato fringe on one end and all White fringe on the other end.)
