KOOKETTE TRIATHLON HAT
Yarn: pick out 3 colors of worsted weight yarn; they need to contrast well with each other; one will be main color (MC), C1 will be used to knit tri motifs and top pattern; C2 will be used for purl in corrugated ribbing and the 3-row pattern that separates the tri motif panel Needles: size 6, 16 or $20^{\circ}$ circular Gauge: 5 st per inch Cast on 108 (multiple of 4) Hat edge-- I prefer a corrugated ribbing, but feel free to use some type of hat edging, ribbing, a picot edge, of your choice. Ribbing$\mathcal{I}\textbf{x}2$ corrugated ribbing for ${\sim}1.5$ in( $[{\sim}12\$ rows or so); use MC and C2. i.e. K2 in MC, P2 in C2 Picot edge--use knitted cast on so you have loose floppy cast on stitches (makes it easier to pick them up later); knit ${\sim}1$ inch; then knit a turning row' ...,p2tog, yo, all the way around; knit stockinette rows, until when you fold the turning row, the rows meet up; pick up the cast on edge (10-15 st at a time) on a separate needle, and knit them together with row being knit, this makes a‘sewed' hem Tri Panel-- Knit 1 or 2 rows stockinette with MC; inc 2 st evenly in one of these rows (110 st total) Choose a 3-row pattern (see Chart 1 for examples) and knit in MC and C2. These patterns are from Sheila MacGregor's Fair Isle Pattern book...you can find examples in other books or feel free to make up your own. Knit 1 or 2 rows stockinette with MC Knit tri motifs following charts in Chart 2...knit in MC and C1 (for a triathlon hat, knit 3 wave motifs, 3 bike motifs, 3 runner motifs; for runner hat, knit all run motifs; for bike hat, knit all bike motifs) Start with the 3 runners (R) (8/9/8 st, 15 rows high), then 3 bikes (B) (13 st, 15 rows high), then 3 waves (S) using following spacing....read sequence below right to left, just as you would knit it 26 wave stitches-——3——B-—-2st——B-2st-——B—-2stR--4stR--4st—R——-2st (108 st) Knit 1 or 2 rows stockinette with MC Knit the same 3-row pattern that you chose earlier, knit in MC and C2 Knit 1 or 2 rows stockinette with MC Knit hat top following Tassled Fez pattern in \*Hats On!' book by Charlene Schurch; page 57; follow pattern for medium size; knit 12 rows of the pattern and then knit the 1" 4 rows again; knit a final row in a single color (you choose, either the MC or the C2). Finishing top of hat: My mom devised a very elegant way to finish the crown of this Tassled Fez pattern (I much prefer it to the method used in the Hats On! Book). Use a 3-needle bind off technique to create the 3-pointed crown top. 18 st on one needle, 18 adjacent stitches on another needle, hold these 2 needles together, as if a single needle (like you do for 3-needle bind off), and then bind off these 2 edges together. Now put next 18st on one needle, adjacent 18st on one needle, and bind these 2 off together. Weave in ends. Block to finish. Acknowledgements: Thanks to my Mom, Shirley, (heyyou on Ravelry) for the initial inspiration for these hats, for coming up with a skookum hat closure, and for teaching me to knit! The small motifs separating the tri motifs are from Sheila MacGregor's book Traditional Fair Isle Knitting. The hat top pattern is from Charlene Schurch's book Hat's On! (my favorite hat book). This pattern is free. Please knit lots and lots for your athletic friends! My vision is to see triathlon transition areas, marathon race starts and cycling race starts populated with these hats! They're great warm up hats as the athletes wait for race starts (particularly in cool climates like Alaska!). Please do not knit the hats for sale.....contact me (tenakee on Ravelry or ccfishc@gci.net) if you're interested in purchasing hats.

yarn, reattach it at the center of the crown, and sew the third point from the center out to the end. Weave in all the ends. Tassels: Make three tassels according to the instructions on )age 14 and attach to the points of the fez using the cord of /our choice. Finger Crochet cord (page 15) was used for the :xample shown in the photograph.
