RECOMMENDED HOOK SIZE: 5 mm (H/8) Crochet Hook GAUGE: Worked in HDC 15 stitches and 12 rows = 4" (10 cm) Please check gauge. If you're measuring smaller, then choose a larger hook. If you're measuring larger then use a smaller hook. For example, if you crochet 15 HDCs x 12 rows and it's only measuring 3.5"(9 cm) try using a 5.5mm (1/9) Hook. If your swatch measures 4.5" (12 cm) try using a 4.5mm (7) hook.
STITCHES USED:
Chain (ch) Single Crochet (SC) Half Double Crochet (HDC) Double Crochet (DC) Back Post Double Crochet (BPDC) Front Post Double Crochet (FPDC)
Special Stitches:
3 DC Cluster Stitch = YO, go through the stitch and pull up 1 loop, (3 loops on hook), YO and pull through 2 loops leaving 2 loops on the hook, YO again and go through the same stitch pull up a loop (THere will be 4 loops on the hook), YO and pull through 2 loops. At this point you will have 3 loops on your hook. YO again and go through the same stitch and pull up a loop. (There will be 5 loops on the hook), YO and pull through 2 loops. You should have 4 loops on the hook. YO and pull through all 4 loops. Chain stitch to close the cluster. Shell Stitch = 2 Double Crochet, chain 1, 2 Double Crochet into same stitch. This hat is designed for 0-3 Months This pattern is copyright protected. Please do not copy. alter, or share this pattern. You're free to do whatever you want with your made items.
Round 1:
MagicCircle: Chain 2, Go back into first loop and make 8 HDC into loop. Slip stitch into first stitch of the round to close loop. Pull tail yarn to make the loop tight. (If you prefer the traditional loop method then chain 4, close the loop with a slip stitch and then make 8 hdt into loop and close with slip stitch into first stitch of round. I do encourage the Magic Circle though.)
Round 2:
Chain 1, 2 HDC in same stitch and in each stitch in this round. You will have 16 HDC total. Complete round with slip stitch into first HDC .
Round 3:
Chain 5. (This will count as 1 DC and 2). In next HDC \*( 1 DC, chain 2. Skip next HDC). Repeat from \* to complete round. Slip stitch into 3 chain of the chain 5. You should have what looks like 9 wheel spokes and 8 spaces. It's OK if it curves into a bowl shape. As you complete the next rows it will lay flat.
Round 4:
You will be working these stitches into the chain 2 spaces. Work 3 SC into the first space, then work 4 SC into the next space. Continue until you complete the round. Slip Stitch into first SC to complete round. You should have31sCs.
Round 5:
2 SC in next stitch \*( 1 SC in next 3 stitches, 2 SC in next) Repeat from \* to complete round. Slip stitch to end round. You should have 39 SC stitches.
Round 6:
(Note: This round is made with 3 DC cluster stitches. Each cluster is made by doing the following: YO, go through the stitch and pull up 1 loop, (3 loops on hook), Y0 and pull through 2 loops leaving 2 loops on the hook, YO again and go through the same stitch pull up a loop (There will be 4 loops on the hook), YO and pull through 2 loops. At this point you will have 3 loops on your hook. YO again and go through the same stitch and pull up a loop. (There will be 5 loops on the hook), YO and pull through 2 loops. You should have 4 loops on the hook. YO and pull through all 4 loops. Chain stitch to close the cluster. ) To start Round 6 chain 2, this will give you the right height to start the cluster. Complete a cluster stitch in the same stitch as the ch 2, Close the cluster stitch with a chain stitch then Chain 1, (this will leave a total of 2 chains between each cluster), skip 1 SC and cluster into the next stitch. You should have a total of 19 clusters. Close out round by slip stitching into top of first cluster of the round.
Round 7:
This round is worked into the chain 2 spaces. HDC 3 into the first space, crochet 4 HDC into the next space. Continue pattern until you reach the end. Close the round with a slip stitch into first HDC. There should be 66 HDCs. Now measure your circle. In order to fit a 0-3 month child you would want the diameter to be approx 5 - 5 1/2" across. (12.75 cm - 14 cm)
Row 8:
Chain 2, in same stitch, 1 Dc, chain 1, 2 dc (This equals a shell stitch), \*\*skip 2 stitches, 1 dc, skip 2 stitches, (2 DC, chain 1, 2 DC in same stitch), repeat until you have 11 sets of shells . There should be a small gap between the first shell and the last. The following rows will be worked back and forth instead of in the round.
Row 9:
We will be using Back Post Double Crochet. This row's cable posts will be worked in the back with BPDC. Chain 2 and work a shell (2 DC, chain 1, 2 DC) into the Chain 1 space from the previous row's shell, Back Post Double Crochet (BPDC) into DC from previous row. Repeat until you finish the row.
Row 10:
Chain 2 and work a shell (2 DC, chain 1, 2 DC) into Chain 1 space from the previous rows shell. Front Post Double Crochet (FPDC) into DC from previous row. Repeat until row is complete. Repeat rows 9 & 10 until bonnet reaches desired length. It should be approximately 5.75" - 6" (14.5 cm - 15.25 cm) from crown to tip. ow, SC into CH2 that began the previous row. This will even out the bonnet shells Add desired braids. I chose to put my braids in the center of the last shell stitch and the first shell stitch of the lastrow.
