Materials:
50g (at least 200 yards) of fingering weight sock yarn for up to a size 8 women's foot 1 set 2.5mm double pointed needles (or size to obtain gauge)

You may require more yarn for foot sizes larger than 8. In this pattern, you are working fewer stitches on the instep/top of foot (24 sts) than on the sole/bottom of foot (32 sts). This is because the mesh on the instep is very. verystretchy!

Cast on 56 sts using a stretchy cast on, such as the long-tailed cast on. Join to work in the round. Arrange stitches as follows: Needle 1: 12 sts Needle 2: 32 sts Needle 3: 12 sts Work at least one inch of K2, P2 ribbing If you do less, your socks may not stay up! Begin heel flap: Knit in ribbing pattern across needle 1. Heel flap is worked over 32 sts on needle 2. Working back and forth on needle 2, repeat the following 2 rows for 32 rows (your heel flap should measure about 2"): Row 1: \*Sl1, K1\* across Row 2: Sl 1, p across End with Row 1. Turn heel: With purl side facing you: Row 1: P18 sts, p2tog, p1 and turn work; Row 2: Sl 1, k5, ssk, k1, turn work; Row 3: Sl 1, p6, p2tog, p1, turn work; Row 4: Sl 1, k7, ssk, k1, turn work; Continue working this way: work until you reach the gap, work the stitch before and the stitch after the gap together, work one more st and turn work; repeat this until all stitches are worked. This should happen on a purl row.
Gusset:
Divide remaining heel stitches onto two needles (9 sts per needle). Combine the two instep needles into one needle (24 sts). Now, knit across 18 heel sts. Pick up and knit 16 sts along edge of heel flap (one for every slipped stitch). Work Round 1 of the Birds Eye Lace Pattern (page 1) across 24 instep sts. Pick up and knit 16 sts along edge of heel flap (one for every slipped stitch). Place a marker here, as this is now the beginning of your round. You will now be going back to knitting in the round. Your needle situation should look like this, in order of how you will be working the needles: Needle 1 (half of the heel): 25 sts Needle 2 (instep): 24 sts Needle 3 (other half of heel): 25 sts Gusset decreases: Round 1: Work across needle 1 to the last 3 sts, k2tog, k1; work Birds Eye Lace Pattern across 24 instep sts on needle 2; k1, ssk, k to end of needle 3. Round 2: K all sts on needle 1, work Birds Eye Lace Pattern across instep, k all sts on needle 3. Repeat these two rounds until needles 1 and 3 each have 16 sts, which brings you back to your cast on total (56 sts around - 24 for the instep and 32 for the sole). Continue working the instep sts in the Birds Eye Lace pattern and the sole sts in stockinette (knit all sts) until your sock is 2" less than desired length. Work the Gusset Decrease rounds again four times (for a total of 8 rows). You should now have 24 sts on the instep and 24 sts on the sole.
