Beorn's Bees: A Diagonally Worked Triangle Shawl Inspired by The Hobbit's Giant Bees and Hobbit Comfort

BEORN'SBEES

By Sarah Jo Burch Inspired by the giant bees tended by Beorn the skin-changer in Tolkien's work The Hobbit, and by the simple comfort of the hobbits themselves, this triangle shawl is worked diagonally from one point to the opposite side - the striping is a perfect compliment to hand dyed yarn and the construction allows you to use every beautiful yard.

You'll need:

2 hanks of Manos del Uruguay Fino (1 each of colors #419 Brass Button and #418 Gaslamp) US size 5 needles (at least a 24" circular to fit all of your stitches)

Gauge:

14 stitches and 24 rows in 2" of garter stitch

The pattern:

Stripes: work four rows of each color, changing colors at the beginning of all-knit row and carrying unused color inside the rolled edging created by slipping stitches. With Brass Button, cast on 4 stitches. -Knit to last 3 stitches, make one, slip last three stitches with yarn forward Repeat these two rows until desired size is reached - I increased to 250 stitches, and might have had enough yarn left for one more stripe in each color (this will create a shawl that's 56" wide and 27.5" from edge to point). Bind off loosely (Jenny's Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Off is a good choice), weave in ends, and block.
