Rovenood Coml by! DeviousRose

Brown cowl with golden roses is @TomCrawford on Ravelry This cowl is something I dreamed up from imagining the silly little phrase "roses and cream" instead of "peaches and cream." Your possibilities with this pattern are limitless- maybe some darker brown yarns for the motifs for a more fairytale look, dark grey motifs with purple and red roses for a gothic look, or even a rainbow assortment of roses! It's cozy while being light and airy, and what starts out as a gift for a dear someone may turn into something you wind up keeping for yourself! Notes: The yarn I used is listed as aran weight and works very much as a thick worsted, but it has somewhat of a hollow core and the end result was something more similar to DK or light worsted. Do whateverworksfor you! For the rosebuds, you will need to know fsc (foundation single crochet). Some good tutorials can be found at Simple Crochet on YouTube or The Purl Bee. There is also a step-by-step tutorial for the rosebuds available from the pattern page with clear written and photo instructions if the written information alone is confusing.

Rosebuds:
Make 10 each of the leaves and the rosebud itself, or as desired. There is a step-by-step tutorial for the rosebuds available from the pattern page with clear written and photo instructions if the written information alone is confusing. :) Rose (with DK or worsted weight yarn): Row 1: Foundation sc 10 loosely, turn. Row 2: Ch 3, 3 dc in first sc, sk 1 sc, sl st in next sc, sk 1 sc, 5 dc in next sc, sk 1 sc, sl st in next sc, sk next sc, 6 dc in next sc, sl st in side of last sc. Do not fasten off. Keeping the hook within the rose, roll rose up, starting from first, smallest dc shell and going outward to the largest shell, with ws facing outward. Arrange to liking, then pinch flat and insert hook from one side to the other through the center, making sure to go through the fsc's of every layer of the rose. It may take some fiddling to go through all the layers of the rose, but it's surprisingly easy. Pull up a loop, then draw yarn through both loops on hook. Fasten off, or repeat again if desired for stability- this will depend on your yart Leaves (with worsted weight yarn): Row 1: Fsc 6, turn. Row 2: (Ch 3, sl st in 1st ch) in first st, sc in next t, 2 hdc in next st (this forms the first leaf), sl st in next st, hdc in next st, sc in last st. Turn. Row 3: Repeat Row 2 and join to beg picot. Sew leaves to rosebuds.
Finishing:
Join motifs in a tube of 3x8 motifs using preferred method, or the sc join as follows: Hold two motifs with ws together and join yarn to one corner of each. Ch 1, sc in same sp, sc across to last corner, fasten off. Repeat on other end of one motif to create a strip of 3 motifs. Block joined cowl. Sew on the roses in a semi-random arrangement, either in the middle of the motifs themselves or even between the motifs, like rosebushes between sidewalk cracks- see above photos! weave in loose ends. Wear or gift with pride!
