Stop the pattern at the round 4, 8, 12, 18, 22 or 26. For the following 2 rounds, knit the stitches on the needles 1 and 4, and purl the stitches on the needles 2 and 3. Knit 2 rounds in stockinette and proceed to the toe instructions.
