TOP-POWNVERSION
CASTING ON
It's important to have a stretchy cast-on for your coZy to be functional. 1 either cast on with a larger weedle, or with two held together. To get the right amount oftail for a long-tail cast-on, wrap the yarn around your cast-on needles ten times with yarn reserved forthe tail. (pic above) The ten loops represent the yarn needed to cast on ten stitches. Use this to measure out for forty (4o) stitches of cast-on tail using two needles or larger needle. (pic above right) cast on 4o stitches.Join in the round, being careful not to twist. 1 pull the tail through my first stitch to prevent twisting.(pic at right)

THEBODY
Knit in Ixi Rib (kipl) until the body measures 1". Change to knitting in stockinette (k only) until the body of measures at least 5.F5" total length. Arrange the stitches so that you have twenty (20) stitches each on two needles.
CLOSING
If you don't want a pocket, graft the stitches closed using kitchener stitch. If you want to add a pocket: Closing the bottom of the cozy is very similar to a three-needle bind-off.

First: lnsert a third needle as ifto knit in the first stitches on the end of both needles. Second: Pull the yarn through both stitches.

Third: Slide the end stitches offthe two left needles, creating a single stitch on the right needle.

Continue in this manner until you have twenty (20) remaining stitches on one needle.

THE POCKET First row: slip 1 st, p to end Second row: slip 1 st, k to end Repeat these two rows until the pocket is 4" long or desired. Slip I st, then Knit in Ix1 Rib (kip1) to end of row. Repeat last row until the pocket measures 4.5" total. Cast off loosely in pattern, leaving an 18" tail.

SEWING THEPOCKET
Thread the cast-on tail onto a tapestry needle and stitch down the sides of the pocket to the body. To make this easier, 1 thread a DPN through the slipped stitches on the pocket and another up the line of stitches I'll be sewing to. This prevents me from having a wiggly line where the pocket meets the body of the cozy.
FINISHNG
Weave in all ends. I also added a chain-stitch handle carrying two strands together.

TOE-UPVERSION
If you don't want a pocket, you might want to try the original toe-up version of this cozy. Fans of Judy's Magic Cast-On may wish to use it here, ortry one I got from Principles of knitting, listed on my blog?.

CASTNG ON
Using the two-needle cast-on 1 described here, cast on 20 stitches on each needle for 4o total cast-on stitches.
THEBODY
Work in stockinette (k) in the round until the body is 5" lowg. Switch to 1x1 rib (kip1) for1". Cast off LooselYin pattern, using a larger weedle if wecessary to ensure a stretchy edge.
THE POCKET
For the pocket, pick up 20 stitches at the cast-on end. Work in stockinette, slipping the first stitch on every row. Work until the pocket is approximately 4" long, then switch to 1x1 rib (e1p1) for 1/2". Cast off LOOSELY in pattern. Starting from the pick-up end, slip stitch the sides of the pockets to the body of thecozy. FINISHING Weave in all ends. Add an i-cord or crochet handle if desired.
