SIZES: Child [16"] (Young Adult [20"], Large Adult [24"]) Hat will stretch up to 1.5" GAUGE: 4.5 sts = 1" in stockinette stitch YARN: Cascade 220 Aran Superwash, 2 colors, 1 skein each (150 yards) Sample: MC = Red Plum [#1988] CC = Strawberry Cream [#894] NEEDLES: Size #8, 16" circular needles and double pointed needles, or any needle size necessary to obtain correct gauge. OTHER MATERIALS: Stitch marker, darning needle for weaving in ends PATTERN KEY: CC = Contrast Color MC = Main Color CO = Cast on PM =Place marker K = Knit K2tog = Knit two stitches together P = Purl TAKE TIME TO SAVE TIME. ALWAYS CHECK YOUR GAUGE. CO 78 (90, 108) sts with MC. PM and join in the round being careful not to twist your stitches. Begin 1x1 Rib Pattern with MC. 1x1 Rib Pattern: \*K1, P1 \*repeat to the end of round. Continue 1x1 Rib Pattern for 1" or 1.5" Starting with CC, begin 6-stitch repeat heart pattern, knitting every round (See color-work chart). [Note: Child size will repeat 13 times, Young Adult 15 times, and Large Adult 18 times] After completing round 17, switch to MC and K until piece measures 4.5" (5", 5") from CO.
Decreases:
Round 1: \*K6 (8, 12), K2tog \*repeat to end Round 2 & all even rounds: K entire round Round 3: \*K5 (7, 12), K2tog \*repeat to end Repeat this decrease pattern, knitting one less stitch before K2tog in every odd round. Switch to dpns when stitches no longer fit comfortably on the circular needle.
