Bubblegum Earflap Hat
Designed by Nancy Moynihan Page I of 2 Knit this cozy earflap hat to keep your head and ears warm in the winter. Knit in a bulky weight yarn, the hat works up very quickly.

This earflap hat features a subtle fair isle pattern, with contrast crochet edging and braids. For extra warmth and to block the wind, the hat is lined with light weight stretchable fleece fabric. Make a matching scarf if you have extra yarn available. Instructions:
Earflaps (make 2):
CO 3 sts Row 1: K3. Row 2: M1, P3, M1. Row 3,5,7,9,11: K to end of row. Row 4: M1, P5, M1. Row 6: M1, P7, M1. Row 8: M1, P9, M1. Row 10: M1, P11, M1. Row 12: P to end of row (13 sts)
Hat body:
Cast on 8 sts, K the 13 sts from the first earflap, cast on 23 sts, K the 13 sts from the second earflap, cast on 7 sts. (64 sts). Being careful not to twist the stitches, place a marker to mark centre back and then join the stitches to begin knitting in the round. Knit 11 rounds (approx $2~\%$ inches). Break yarn. Using CC, K 1 rnd, then P 1 rnd (creates contrast stripe). Break yarn Change back to MC. Knit 10 rounds in plain or fair isle pattern if desired. Break yarn. Change to CC. Decrease row: (K6, k2tog) 8 times. (56 sts). P 1 rnd.
Hat top shaping:
Change back to MC and begin hat top shaping. Row 1: (K5, K2tog) 8 times. (48 sts) Row 2,4,6,8,10: K rnd. Row 3: (K4, K2tog) 8 times. (40 sts) Row 5: (K3, K2tog) 8 times. (32 sts) Row 7: (K2, K2tog) 8 times. (24 sts) Row 9: (K1, K2tog) 8 times. (16 sts) Row 11: (K2tog) 8 times. (8 sts) Pull yarn through the last 8 sts, pull inside and weave in the end.
Finishing:
Weave in all loose ends. After blocking, lay out hat and measure fleece lining for lower section of hat (from CC stripe to lower edge of hat. (Cut flece with the stretch of the fabric across the bottom of the hat, so that there willbe a slight stretch when the hat is worn). Sew fleece lining in hat Using CC, crochet around the bottom edge of the hat. At the bottom of each earflap, cut and attach 6 double length strands of CC yarn. Braid, tie off and trim.
