This is a great cabled hat with a big pom pom.
Materials: 16" size 8 circular needles and size 8 double pointed needles or size needed to obtain gauge 2 skeins of chunky yarn (approx. 260 yards) I used Berroco Vintage Chunky Gauge = 4.75st to 1" in 2X2 rib Approx. 21" circumference CO 84st K2, P2 rib for 3 inches\*\* Repeat all following row instructions around 8 times Inc. Row 1: k1, p2, k6, p2. Make 1, 4 times evenly spaced around (88 stitches) Row 2-6: k1, p2, k6, p2. Row 7: k1, p2, C6F, p2. Repeat Rows 1-7, 2 more times Begin decreases changing to double pointed needles when necessary Dec. Row 8: k1, p2tog, k6, p2tog (72 stitches) Row 9-12: k1, p1, k6, p1 Dec. Row 13: k1, p1, k2tog, k2, k2tog, p1 (56 stitches) Row 14: k1, p1, C4F, p1
Row 15-18: k1, p1, k4, p1 Dec. Row 19: k1, p1, k2tog (twice), p1 (40 stitches) Row 20: k1, p1, k2, p1 Dec. Row 21: k1, p1, k2tog, p1 (32 stitches) This picture is the modified version Row 22-23: k1, p1, k1, p1\* Dec. Row 24: k2tog (16 stitches) Dec. Row 25: k2tog (8 stitches) Cut a long length of yarn and thread through the 8 live stitches, pull tight and weave in ends. Make very large pom pom and attach at top of hat. \*\*For a modified version where the ribbing isn't folded up, knit the ribbing for 2" and omit row 22. This used exactly 2 skeins of Rialto Chunky including the pom pom (or 132 yards). I used #9 needles with this yarn.
