The Fiona Shawl

This pattern is an original design by me : Helen Jacobs-Grant and has been designed and made for my friend Fiona who lives in Canada. I hope you enjoy making this pattern as much as I have enjoyed creating it with love and knitting the garment up myself
Materials :
40 pegs 3/4 inch gauge knitting board or knitting loom (large 42 peg adult hat loom from CinDwood Crafts was used in this example http://cindwoodcrafts.com/) loom hook tapestry needle three large chunky buttons
Yarn :
Noro Silk Mountain : $65\%$ wool, $25\%$ silk and $10\%$ kid mohair Adriafil Regina $100\%$ merino in charcoal grey (use both strands of yarn held together as one)
Yarn alternative suggestion :
any mixed natural fbre chunky boucle yarn which has a texture to it held together with a smooth worsted weight or DK $100\%$ merino wool yarn

Stitches and Skills :
crochet cast on knit stitch purl stitch garter stitch (one garter stitch row is made up of one row knit stitch and one row purl stitch) ewrap drop stitch rows (wrap one peg miss one peg passing the working yarn behind it wrap next peg and so on) flat panel and short row shaping flat panel crochet bind off
Instructions :
crochet cast on 40 stitches row 1 : purl row 2 : knit row 3 : purl repeat rows 2 and 3 : 3 times row $10:{\mathrm{K}}3$ ewrap next peg then every other peg passing the working yarn behind the empty pegs until last three stitches, K3. row $11:{\mathrm{P}}3$ , ewrap next peg then every other peg passing the working yarn behind the empty pegs until last three stitches, P3. there should be three pegs at each end with one stitch on each peg, all other pegs have two stitches. knit off all bottom loops over the top ones there should now be only one stitch on each peg. repeat rows 10 and $11:5$ times row $22:\mathrm{K}3$ ewrap next peg then every other peg passing the working yarn behind the empty pegs to peg 20, lift stitch on peg 21 wrap peg and place loop back on the peg. row 23 : turn and ewrap every other peg until last three stitches, P3. knit off all bottom loops over the top ones there should now be two stitches on peg 21 and only one stitch on all the other pegs. row $24:\mathrm{K}3$ ewrap next peg then every other peg passing the working yarn behind the empty pegs to peg 18,lift stith on peg 19 wrappeg and place loopback on the peg. row 25 : turn and ewrap every other peg until last three stitches, P3. knit off all bottom loops over the top ones there should now be two stitches on pegs 19 and 21 and only one stitch on all the other pegs. row $26:\mathrm{K}3$ ewrap next peg then every other peg passing the working yarn behind the empty pegs to peg 16, lift stitch on peg 17 wrap peg and place loop back on the peg. row 27 : turn and ewrap every other peg until last three stitches, P3. knit off all bottom lops over the top ones there should now be two stitches on pegs 17, 19 and 21 and only one stitch on all the other pegs. row $28:\mathrm{K}3$ ewrap next peg then very other peg passing the working yarn behind the empty pegs to peg 16, wind peg 17 row 29 : turn and ewrap every other peg until last three stitches, P3. knit off all bottom loops over the top ones on pegs 4 - 17 lifting both bottom loops on peg 17 together as one. there should now be two stitches on pegs 19 and 21 and only one stitch on allthe other pegs. row $30:\mathrm{K}3$ ewrap next peg then every other peg passing the working yarn behind the empty pegs to peg 18, wind peg 19 row 31 : turn and ewrap every other peg until last three stitches, P3. knit offall bottom loops over the top ones on pegs 4 - 19 lifting both bottom loops on peg 19 together as one. there should now be two stitches on pegs 21 and only one stitch on all the other pegs. row $32:{\mathrm{K}}3$ ewrap next peg then every other peg passing the working yarn behind the empty pegs to peg 20, wind peg 21 row 33 : turn and ewrap every other peg until last three stitches, P3. knit off all bottom loops over the top ones on pegs 4 - 21 lifting both bottom loops on peg 21 together as one. there should now be only one stitch on all the other pegs. rows 34 to 129 : repeat rows $10-33:4$ times more (you have completed 5 pattern repeats in total) row 130 to 131 : repeat rows 10 and $11:5$ times row 140 : knit row row 141 : purl row row 142 to 145 : repeat rows 140 and 141 twice more ( you have just completed three garter stitch rows in total with rows 140 - 145 inclusive ) row 146 : K35, wrap peg 36 row 147 : turn, purl to end row 148 : K36, knit the two on peg 36 stitches together as one, wrap peg 37 row 149 : turn purl to end row $150:\mathrm{K}37$ . knit the twoonpeg 37 stitches together as one, wrap peg 38 row 151 : turn purl to end row $152:{\mathrm{K}}38$ , knit thetwoon pg 38stithes together as one, wrappeg 39 row 153 : turn purl to end row 154 : K39, knit the two on peg 39 stitches together as one, wrap peg 40 row 155 : turn purl to end row $156:\mathrm{K}40$ , knit the two on peg 40 stitches together as one row 157 : purl row row 158 : knit row row 159 : purl row row 160 to 375 : repeat rows 10 - 33 : until you have completed 9 pattern repeats in total

row 376 and 377 : repeat rows 10 and 11 : 5 times row 386 : knit row row 387 : purl row row 388 to 391 : repeat rows 386 and 387 twice more ( you have just completed three garter stitch rows in total with rows 386 - 391 inclusive ) row 392 : knit 39, wrap peg 40 row 393 : turn, purl to end row 394 : knit 38, wrap peg 39 row 395 : turn, purl to end row 396 : knit 37, wrap peg 38 row 397 : turn, purl to end row 398 : knit 36, wrap peg 37 row 399 : turn, purl to end row 400 : knit 35, wrap peg 36 row 401 : turn, purl to end row 402 : knit row, knit the two stitches off on pegs 36 to 40 off together as one row 403 : purl row row 404 : knit row row 405 : purl row row 406 to 477 : repeat rows 10 - 33 : until you have completed 3 pattern repeats in total row 478 and 479 : repeat rows 10 and 11 : five times row 488 : knit row 489 : purl row 490 : knit row 491 : purl row 492 : knit row 493 : purl row 494 : flat panel crochet bind off

Finishing Up
sew on your three buttons along the top edge of the left front piece To make three button hole loops make a slip knot loop and place it on one peg of your loom make a chain : ewrap and knit off one loop on the same peg eight times cut yarn and thread it through the loop taking it off the loom and pulling tight. make two more chains in the same way sew your three button hole loops you just made onto the right side front one on the side edge and two alone the top edge being sure to line both the left side front and right side front up so that the buttons can be fastened. weave in the ends. block if necessary by wetting the whole piece and shaping, leave to dry i its shape.
