Cozy Mittens Pattern: Bulky Yarn Twist Cable Mittens for Cold Winters

ONCE UPON A TIME

Pattern illustration

By louti2012 Here are long, fluffy and cozy mittens for a cold and of harsh winter. They can be worn stretched mid-forearm or gathered around the wrist. I used a bulky yarn to work them and it make's it a quick project. The twist cable is spectacular, but it is very simple to work: crosses are only one twist made every 10 rows. The thumb gusset is decorative and worked in stockinette stitch, while the body of the mitten is purled. They are worked in the round, from the wrist to the fingers. It is important to use a stretchy cast-on and also an elastic bind-off. Left and right mittens are symmetrical. Size: medium women.

Materials:

Bulky yarn: I've used “Fjord by Annell, 3 skeins, 145m (158 y). DPNs or circular needles: US 9 (5,5mm) and US 8 (5mm). One cable needle. StitchesMarkers. A tapestry needle. Gauge : 14 sts x 23rows = 4 inches, in stockinette stitch.

Techniques and abbreviations:

Knit one (K1). Purl one (P1). \* Knit 2, Purl2\* (\*K2, P2\*) Stretchy cast-On: Twisted German Cast On. Cable : worked on 16 sts and 10 rows - 1"t row:\* K1, P2, K2, P2, K2, P2, K2, P2, K1\* - 2d to 6'"h row: purl the purls and knit the knits. - 7 th row: \* C8B, C8F\* purl the purls and knit the knits. - 8" to 16h row: purl the purls and knit the knits, and remove row. - Repeat the last 10 rows. Cable 8 back: (C8B): slip next 4 sts onto a cable needle, and hold at back of work, work the next 4 sts on left-hand needle, then work the 4 sts which are on the cable needle. Cable 8 front: (C8F): slip next 4 sts onto a cable needle, and hold at front of work, work the next 4 sts on left-hand needle, then work the 4 sts which are on the cable needle. Make one: (M1): insert left needle from front to back under the strand between the last worked stitch and the following one, and knit one stitch. Bind-off: K1, \*yo, k1. Use left needle to lift yo and first k1 over last k1 on right needle and drop off both needles\*. Rep from \*to\* until only 1 stitch remains on right needle. Cut the yarn and pull it through the last stitch.

Instructions :

1) Cast-On 40 sts, using needle US 9, using German cast-On, join in the round without twisting. 2) \*K2, P2\* for 25 rounds. Place a marker at the beginning of the round. 3) Place cable stitches in continuation of the rib 2/2:\* K1, P2, K2, P2, K2, P2, K2, P2, K1\* you can use markers. 4) Then work in cable pattern: knit the knits and purl the purls, and purl the others 24 sts. For the first time, cross twist at 7th row, and then at 1oth row. 5) Change and use needle US 8, at the second twist of the cable. 6) When you cross twisting for the 4th time, begin the increases for the thumb: Around the 4"h st before the cable (left mitt). Around the 4"h st after the cable (right mitt). M1 before this stitch, and M1 after this stitch. Repeat the increases as follows: all every 3 rows M1, K3, M1. M1, K5, M1. M1, K7, M1. M, K9, M1. Increase one st, facing the thumb, while joining the row: You get 40 sts again. 8) Work 8 rows in pattern. 9) \* K2, P2\* 5 rows. Place the stitches the same way as at the beginning. 10) Bind-off loosely (see Techniques and abbreviations). 11) Pick-up the 15 sts of the thumb, add 1 st facing the mitt, then you get 16 sts : Knit 8 rows. Purl 2 rows. Bind-off in knitting all sts. 12) Cut the yarn, and weave in ends. 13) Make work the second mitt, be careful the mittens are symmetricals!
