Earth Weave Cowl (free pattern, rev. 1/26/15)
Picket Fence Fiber Studio by Kim Sequeira

If you've always wanted to try mosaic knitting, but were a little nervous, this is the pattern to start with. This is an easy stitch pattern from Barbara Walker's “Third Treasury of Knitting Patterns". It's a fun, fast knit and I love watching the Noro colors change!!
Materials:
Main color: approximately 180 yards worsted weight yarn. Contrasting color: 100 yards. Sample was made with Malabrigo Rios in "Paris Night" and Noro Silk Garden Worsted, color #354 Size 9 circular needles, 24-inch cable. Stitch marker to mark beginning of round Gauge: 4 stitches per inch after blocking Finished Measurements: 1o" tall x 30" around
NOTES:
Mosaic knitting is a great way to do color work without having to carry more than one color across. You use one color at a time, knit with that color and slip the stitches that are the opposite color. Easy! I tend to knit on the tighter side, so I find that it helps to relax and knit on the loose side. It will help the piece lay flat and not be “bunchy". I found that the cast on and bind off methods I used created very nice, matching edges. I am including instructions for them, but feel free to use whichever methods youprefer. CABLE CAST ON: Make a slipknot, leaving it on the left needle. Knit into the slipknot, leave it on the left needle, and slip the new stitch onto the left needle. Insert the right needle between the 2 stitches on the left needle, wrap yarn around and draw a new stitch through. Slip this new stitch onto the left needle. Continue casting on, inserting the right needle between the first two stitches on the left hand needle, wrapping the yarn and drawing the new stitch through and placing on the left needle. LACE BIND OFF (purl wise): Purl the first two stitches together; slip the stitch on the right needle back to the left needle. Purl that stitch and the next one together. Continue around. Abbreviations: K =Knit S = slip the next stitch purlwise with yarn in back Directions: With Main color (MC) cast on 128 stitches, join round.
