Unseen Socks

These socks were made for the Ankh-Morpork Knitter's Guild Wars. The linked Us are the symbol of the Unseen University where Wizards are trained. It uses a Welsh heel and a flat toe, as found in Nancy Bush's Knitting Vintage Socks. The chart reads from left to right.

Tools: set of 4 2mm dpns Yarn: Lang Jawoll Solid Superwash one skein MC and one Skein CC Gauge: 9 x 12 = 1" Cast on 78 sts. Divide so there are 26 stitches on 3 needles Rnds 1-4: K1P1 rib. 44: Follow chart for 6 repeats of the pattern around and 3 repeats dow1 Heel flap: The heel is worked over 41 stitches on one needle, with the instep divided overtwoneedles. Row 1: k20. Turn Row 2: sl1, p19, k1, p20 Row 3: sl1, k19, p1, k20 Row 4: sl1, p19, k1, p20 Rep rows 3 and 4 28 times until there are 14 selvedge stitches, ending with a purl row. Turn Heel: Row 1: sl1, k9, yo, k2tog, k5, k2tog, k1, p1, k1, k2tog, k5, k2tog, turn Row 2: y0, p8, k1, p10, turn Row 3: yo k2tog, k5, k2tog k1, p1, k1, k2tog, k5, k2tog turn Rep rows 2-3 until all stitches have been worked, but leave off the yos on the final row. End with a purl row. There should be 17 heels stitches. Gussets: Row 1: k17, using the same needle pick up and knit the 14 selvedge stitches. On needle 2, k across instep. On needle 3, pick up the 14 selvedge stitches on the other side and k8. 82 sts in total. Row 2. Knit to last 3 sts on needle 1. k2tog, k1. Knit to first 3 sts on needle 3. K1 psso. K to end. (80 sts in total) Row 3 and 4: Knit around. Row 5: Rep row 2 (78 sts in total) Row 6 and 7: Knit around Row 8: Rep row 2 (76 sts in total) Foot: Knit around until desired length. Toe: Arrange so 38 sts are on needle 2, and 19sts are on needle 1 and Round 1: Knit to last 3 sts on needle 1. K2tog, k1. On needle 2 k1, sl1, k1, psso, k32, k2tog, k1. On needle 3 k1 sll1, k1, psso, k to end. Round 2: Knit around. Rep rounds 1&2 17 times, until 12 sts remain. Finish with Kitchener stitch. Weave in ends.
