Yarn: Fingering weight/ sock weight is best The best yarns for Preemies are spun from cotton, bamboo, acrylic, and alpaca. examplesshown: Regia: my first regia & cascade heritage paints. Needle: 2.5mm (US1.5) to 3mm Colors: White/blue /pink/lavender + other gender neutral colors Avoid yellow because the micro-preemies skin can be a little dusky at birth and the color yellow isn't flattering. Avoid heavy variegratedyarns. A few rich colors dont hurt ..mostly soft pastel are great. Embellishments: Try to keep anything sewn on to thefrontof theCardiand away from the sides and back of the body so the baby won't be laying on any kind of applique, silk flower, etc. Felted heart or special buttons are a nice touch. These Cardigans are given to the mothers of mirco- preemies who have died .. a photograph is taken and then the mothers to get theknitwear as a keepsake. I wanted to encourage a lovely lady whoI discovered had this very tragic heartbreak during her pregnancy at 20 weeks she loss her little sweet baby .l am pouring as much love and gratitude into these knits for all the Mothers going through this distressing time . I have had a few people request to knit with,me and mail these Cardigan to me.Contact me for an address but you must must send items in ZiPLOCK bag before packaging and mailing them. I received a outdated pattern with no.designer name, that i found difficult to understand due to the vintage style writing.l decided to heavily modifiy and turn it into a row by row pattern to possibly make it easier for any level knitter. Hoping others will join in on my on-going project of knitting these cardigans for NicU micro-preemie from1-4lbs. L am reminded to be even more grateful as i look at my sweet10 year old who will be helping to knit these as well. Items from this pattern are NoT to be sold. This is knitted in one piece from neck down with raglan style sleeves ,with garter stitch pattern on the band of sweater.Bottonhole rows are indicated which are every'2 increase rows or not at all, you can chose to add Clear plastic snap buttons. I only wanted 4 buttons. or snaps for mine. Place marker to help visually remember where I am at and for counting if I am lost.This is optional.l also place at after K3 band section. (24 stitches for each sleeveandback) Knitting the First sleeve: Rw21-31: Knit across front including .the k1 middle of increase : K3, K14( this includes the middle increase st.), K24 back and forth in Stockingnette for 12 rows on just these 24 sleeve1 stitches by turning the work Rw32: Knit 4 row of Ribbing or seed stitch ..Cast off in ribbing pattern leaveataillongenoughtosewthesleeveseam. Knitting second sleeve: Rw33: Rejoin the yarn at the back stitches .. across to get to the 2nd sleeve RepeatRw21-32 Fronts and back: Rejoin yarn across the second front section.(you will now have both front sections and back on the needle.) Rw34:K3,P13,P2togto snugly join the front and back underthe arm,P25,P2tog to snugly join the front and back underthe arm, P13,K3 Rw35: k1 ,yo, k2tog ,k13 , k2tog to snugly join the front and back under the arm, knit to the end of row. (Note: You can do more button hole than 3 you just need to space accordingly as i have shown perviously.decidebeforeyouknitthebodynext) -Continue to knit and purl back and forth on the body for 10 more row when that is complete. -Next you Rib or seed stitchfor 4rows Castoff Sew up both sleeve and add buttons to make each one unique. Take a finish Cardigan to your local hospital and see if it suit their need for their Mirco- preemie 1-3lbs. That they you can start a on- going relationship of knitting for them.
