To make the hat without I-cord on the earflaps, simply begin by casting on 4 stitches, P1 K2 P1, then continue from Row 2. Cast on 3 stitches on the size 10 DPNs. Knit 12-14" of 3-stitch I-cord. Instead of sliding the I-cord down to knit the next row, turn and purl the 3 stitches. 1: (right side) K1, M1, K2 (4 st) 2: K1, P2, K1 3: P1, K2, P1 4: K1, M1, P2, M1, K1 (6 st) 5: P2, K2, P2 6: CO2, P2, K2, P2, K2 (8 st) 7: CO2, K2, P2, K2, P2, K2 (10 st) 8: CO2, K2, P2, ... P2 (12 st) 9: CO2, P2, K2, ... P2 (14 st) 10-20: Continue in 2x2 rib. After knitting row 20, turn to face the right side. CO 10 stitches. Cut the yarn and place on a stitch holder. Repeat until row 20 for second ear flap. After knitting row 20, turn to face the right side. CO 18 stitches. Knit back across the 18 stitches you just cast on in the 2x2 rib, beginning with K2. As you do this, transfer to the size 11 circular. Join these 18 stitches plus earflap to the 10 cast on stitches plus earflap from the stitch holder. There should now be 56 stitches on your needle: 14 for each ear flap, 18 for the front, and 10 for the back. Join in the round and continue working in 2x2 rib for 7 inches. (I began my stripe after 2" and made it 1.5" wide.) When the hat reaches 7", K2tog, P2tog, repeat around one round, essentially decreasing the 2x2 rib to 1x1. (28 st) K2tog all around one round. (14 st) Cut yarn and thread through remaining 14 stitches, pull through to the inside, and knot. Weave in all ends.
