Right Heel Turn
Work rows 1 and 2 once as they are the set-up rows which create the gaps you'll be “closing" Then repeat rows 3 and 4 until all of the stitches have been worked - 17 (19, 21, 23) stitches remain on your needle. Row 1 (Ws): Sl 1, p15 ( 17, 19, 21), p2tog, p1, turn. Row 2 (RS): Sl 1,k6, ssk, k1, turn. Row 3: Sl 1, p to 1 stitch before the gap, p2tog, p1, turn. Row 4: Sl 1, k to 1 stitch before the gap, ssk, k1, turn.
Right Instep & Gusset
For your convenience (or maybe mine) the gusset directions have been broken down into three sections: 1st Half Sole, Instep, and 2nd Half Sole. Due to the odd number of heel stitches you'll have one additional stitch in the 1st Half Sole section - keep this in mind when counting your stitches. Work as follows: Set-Up Rounds - Work these four rounds once to set-up your gusset section. Round 1 - 1st Half Sole: Pick up and knit up the slipped stitches along the side of your heel flap plus an extra stitch in the space between needles. Instep: \*P1, k tbl\* repeat to the last stitch, p1. 2nd Half Sole: Pick up an extra stitch in the space between needles, then pick up and knit the slipped stitches along the side of your heel flap. Knit 8 (9, 10, 11), PM to mark the new beginning of the round. Round 2 - 1st Half Sole: SM, knit to the last 2 stitches k2tog. Instep: \*P1, k tbl\* repeat to the last stitch, p1. 2nd Half Sole: Ssk, k to marker. Round 3 - 1st Half Sole: SM, knit to the end. Instep: \*P1, k tbl\* repeat to the last stitch, p1. 2nd Half Sole: K to marker. Round 4 - 1st Half Sole: SM, knit to the last 3 stitches k2tog, k1. Instep: (P1, k tbl) 4 (5, 6, 7) times, p1, 3x2 RC, (p1, k tbl) 2 (3, 4, 5) times, p1, 3x2 RC, (p1, k tbl) twice, p1. 2nd Half Sole: K1, ssk, k to marker. Keep working in pattern until you reach just past the halfway point of your foot length - maintaining your sole needle decreases until you've returned to your original stitch count of 56 (64, 72, 80) stitches. Shift the beginning of the round to the instep (needle one) after all the gusset decreases are completed. Continue to work the pattern on the instep stitches and stockinette on the sole stitches. Row 39: Sl 1 wyif, kl, p tbl, k1, 3x2 LC, (k1, p tbl) 7 times, k1, 3x2 LC, (k1, p tbl) 5 times. Rounds 5 - 10: \*(P1, k tbl)\* to the last stitch on needle one, pl, k to the end.
