Swimming Upstream

Based on the stitch pattern from my River Ness socks, Swimming Upstream is a quick lace cowl that looks great in both solid and variegated yarns.
|Circumference:
[22 inches around by 8.75 inches tall (56 cm by 22 cm) Cowl can be made smaller or larger by adding stitches in multiples of 12. Cast on numbers for different Igauges are given on page 3. Yardage requirements will vary. JUS Size 6 (4.0 mm) (or size needed to obtain gauge) needle(s) for your preferred method of knitting small circumferences in the round, such as 16" circular, Magic Loop, or dpns. Tapestry needle for weaving in ends Ten stitch markers (one per repeat) Blockingsupplies
Gauge
22 stitches and 25 rows in (k2, p1) rib = 4" (10 cm) [Exact gauge is not crucial, but changes will affect the size of the finished cowl and yarn usage.

k:knit p:purl yo:yarnover k2tog: knit the next two stitches together ssk: slip one stitch knitwise, slip the next stitch knitwise, knit these two stitches together Rnd(s): round(s)
Instructions
Cast on 120 stitches. Join for working in the round, placing marker to indicate the start of the round. If markers to divide repeats are desired, place one every 12 stitches.
Edging
Rnds 1-4: k1, (p1, k2) around to last two stitches, p1, k1
Body
Rnd 1: [k1, p1, yo, ssk, p1, k2, p1, k2tog, yo, p1, k1] around Rnd 2: [k1, p1, k1, yo, ssk, k2, k2tog, yo, k1, p1, k1] around Rnd 3: [k1, p1, k2, yo, ssk, k2tog, yo, k2, p1, k1] around Rnd 4: k1, (p1, k2) around to last two stitches, p1, k1 Rnd 5: [k1, p1, k2tog, yo, p1, k2, p1, yo, ssk, p1, k1] around Rnd 6: [k1, k2tog, yo, k1, p1, k2, p1, k1, yo, ssk, k1] around Rnd 7: [k2tog, yo, (k2, p1) twice, k2, yo, ssk] around Rnd 8: Repeat Rnd 4 Repeat Rnds 1-8 until cowl is 8 inches (20 cm) tall (wide) or \~0.75" (2 cm) less than desired height, ending with Rnd 3 or 7. Repeat Edging Rnds 1-4. Bind off loosely in pattern. Weave in yarn ends and block as desired.
