Cabled Hat With Brim

Copyright 2009, Melissa Schaschwary - Dandiliongirl Designs This pattern is for personal use only, not for sale or mass production. This is a great stash buster project and is a great way to get rid of those leftover halfskeins of yarn. This hat knits up incredibly fast and is snuggly warm! If made with wool, which I suggest since it's warmest and lends to stretching, this hat is one size fits all (tweens and adults). Happy Knitting!
Materials
16 inch, US Size 10 circular needles US Size 10 Double Pointed Needles 150 yards of bulky yarn. For the hat shown in the picture, I used roughly 80 yards of Tahki Montana in color 002 (for the brim and top) and about 60 yards of Plymouth Yarn Baby Alpaca Grande for the center. These are approximate numbers! An old baseball cap from which you can harvest an old brim A darning needle for weaving in ends A cableneedle

Now take that old baseball hat and remove the plastic brim from the fabric. To do this, 1 cut the brim from the hat first and then use scissors to tear away at the fabric covering the plastic. Measure 1 inch from where the brim touches the head and trim away the access plastic. Position the brim on the underside of the hat, pull the fabric down over it, and then fold it back and up under the brim on the underside of the hat. Be sure that the cables are where you want them in respect to the brim. You may want to pin the brim into place and try it on first to be sure it's in the position you want. Taking the yarn you used for the brim, stitch around the brim holding it into place, then continue stitching, folding the fabric under evenly around the hat. Weave in your ends and block. Blocking around the base of the hat willflatten the stitches, so they lay flatter and don't appear so bulky around the head where the fabric is doubled up. Enjoy and stay warm!
