Hill's Boarder Beanie
My daughter requested a beanie with a flat top. We love the fit! A great basic hat that whips up quickly.

Materials
Yarn: Worsted weight + novelty yarn held together for main part of hai Sample with braids: I Love This Yarn Jazz Stripes, Bernat Matrix Sample with pompom: ILTY Sweet Mocha, Red Heart Shocking Pink Crochet Hooks: I, J Miscellaneous: yarn needle Gauge: 4" = 11.5 hdc and 9 rounds Sizes: toddler to adult Notes: Work in a continuous round, unless otherwise noted. This hat can be made holding 2 strands of yarn together with a J hook or with one strand ww and an I hook. Directions: Start all sizes the same. Work through increase round for desired size, then skip to"body". With J hook and 2 strands of yarn, make a magic loop of 8 HDC (or start with preferred method for starting an 8hdc circle), join and pull closed. 1. 2hdc in each stitch around (16sts). 2. 2hdc in each stitch around (32sts). 3. \*hdc 3, 2 hdc in next st\*, repeat to end of round. (40sts) 4. \*hdc 4, 2 hdc in next st\*, repeat to end of round. (48sts) 2-5T 5. \*hdc 5, 2 hdc in next st\*, repeat to end of round. (56sts) child/preteen 6. \*hdc 6, 2 hdc in next st\*, repeat to end of round. (64sts) teen/adult

Body: Remove marker and hdc each stitch until hat is 2" shorter then desired length (see chartbelow). Sc in next st. Sl st in next st. Cut yarns and pick up contrasting color for band. The band is worked with only one strand of yarn. Working in BLO, Ch 1, sc in each st around. Continue to sc in each st around until hat measures desired length, approximately 3-6 rounds. Sl st in next st. Finish off and weave in ends. Earflaps: Fold hat in half. With right side of hat facing towards you, attach yarn with a sl st to one side. Start with the appropriate size: 2-5T: Ch 2, hdc 11 Child: Ch 2, hdc 12 Preteen/teen: Ch 2, hdc 13 Teen/adult: Ch 2, hdc 14 After first row of hdc as listed above, follow these instructions for all sizes: Ch 2, turn, \*hdc in next st, hdc in each st across until 2sts remain, hdc2tog, ch 2, turn\*. Repeat until 2 sts remain. Finish off. Fold hat in half to find placement for 2nd earflap. It should start exactly across from the first flap. Starting on the RS of the hat, attach yarn and follow directions for earflap. Attach braids if desired. Attach yarn to center back of hat. Ch 1, sc around bottom edge of hat, working 2sc in each earflap tip, sl st to join. Finish off and weave in ends. Braids: Cut 6-9, 30" strands of yarn. Use a yarn needle to pull ends through tip of one earflap. Pull through until even with other end and braid. Tie a 6" piece of matching yarn around braid, 2" from bottom. Trim if needed. Repeat for other side.
