The stitch pattern used for this hat reminds me of butterflies..
Materials:
180 yards worsted weight yarn (Cherry Tree Hill Silk & Merino Worsted was used in the sample) \* needles for knitting in the round (DPNs or circular) in $4.5\mathsf{m m}+5.5\mathsf{m m}$ (US $7+9)$ I or size to obtain gauge \* yarn needle \* small piece of cardboard to make tassels
Gauge:
\* 21.5 sts + 25 rows = 4" in pattern stitch
Special Stitches:
+ Quilted Lattice Stitch - 8 row repeat, multiple of $6\;{\tt s t}+{\mathrm{\Omega}}^{\mathrm{\scriptsize~1}}$ Be sure to stretch the float sufficiently to avoid making the lattice pattern too tight and having it pucker row 1: $^{\star}\mathsf{K}\,^{\star}$ , sl 5 wyif\*; repeat to last st, K1 row 2 (and all even-numbered rows): K to end row 3: K3, \*insert needle under loose strand and knit next stitch, bringing stitch out under strand, ${\sf K5^{\star}}$ ., repeat to last 3 sts, K3 row 5: sl 3 wyif, $^{\star}\mathsf{K}(\mathsf{I}$ , Sl 5 wyif\*; repeat to last 3 sts, sl 3 wyif row 7: \*knit first stitch under loose strand (as in row 3), ${\sf K5^{\star}}$ ; repeat to last st, knit last stitch under loose strand \*Kitchner Stitch
Pattern:
\* with smaller needles $(4.5\;\mathsf{m m})$ , CO 104 stitches and join in the round \* work 10 rounds in $_{2\times2}$ rib, decreasing 1 stitch at end of final round + switch to larger needles $(5.5\;\mathsf{m m})$ and begin working pattern stitch as described above \* work quilted latice stitch for 7.5 repeats (6.25 inches/16 cm from top of ribbing) or until hat is as long as desired \* graft top together using kitchner stitch
Finishing:
\* make 2 tassels $\&$ add one to each corner \* weave in all ends & block lightly
