Cozy Night Owl Shawl Pattern with Baby Alpaca Silk and German Short Row Technique

Night owl

A nice and comfy shawl with our favourite nocturnal animal.

Materials:

needles: 2 straight, or 1 long circular. yarn: approximately 300 m I used: 270 m of Drops baby alpaca silk, but I'm a tight knitter, so you could need more.

Methods:

-The cast-on, and bind-off -l used the German short row technique for the body of the shawl. A tutorial for that can be found here: <http://www.ravelry.com/twir/86/ask-a-knitter-26>

Tips:

-You can increase the width of the shawl by adding owls. You can increase the depth of the shawl by changing the number of stitches added with every short row. -To get a very even stockinette, you could use a smaller needle for the purl rows. To see if that works for you, try it first. - You could add stars to the body of your shawl by doing yarnovers in the short rows. Do note that you have to knit stitches together after the yo to keep the stitch count correct.

Gauge:

Not crucial, but my gauge was 21 st/ 32r = 10x10 cm.

Directions:

For a shawl with 11 owls: Cast on 257 stitches (11x23 +4 edge st) Row 1-6: stockinette (if you start with a purl row, do one extra row to make sure you start the chart on the knit side of yourwork). Row 7: Start the chart. Please note: the chart lists only RS rows, apart from row 18 (the eyes are made in that row). Apart from that eye row, all the WS rows are purled. After the owl chart: Start the short rows by knitting to 3 stitches beyond the center stitch. Add 5 stitches in every knit/purl row (3 on the first purl row). Knit and purl 1 row with all the stitches Bind off.
