STOCKHOLMdesign by Amy E. Anderson
This sweater was inspired by the simple lines of Scandinavian design. The corrugated rib, worked in variegated yan, creates an interesting look without being difficult. This design is suitable for beginning knitters. The body is worked in the round to the armholes. Directions are given for four sizes to fit women and men. If only one number is given, it applies to all sizes. Materials: Main Color (MC): 1200 (1300, 1400, 1600) yds of lightweight worsted wool, such as Cascade 220 or Dale Heilo Contrast Color (CC): 220 yds of Cleckheaton Tapestry 8 ply, variegated. Needles: Size 4, $16^{\circ}$ and $29^{\mathfrak{n}}$ circular, and double-pointed (dp), or size needed to obtain gauge. Gauge: 17 sts $=3^{\circ}$ in stockinette Finished Dimensions: Chest at armpits: 42%" (462", 49%", 53") Waistband: $40^{\circ}$ (44", 46", 50") Body Length: 22" $(23^{\circ},$ $23\%$ , 24%") Sleeve Length: 17%" (18", 18%", 19")
With MC and $29^{\circ}$ circular needle, CO 200 (220, 240, 270) sts.
Join and knit 2 rds. Next rd: Increase 40 (44, 40, 30) sts evenly spaced by knitting into the front and back of every $5^{\mathrm{fh}}\,(4^{\mathrm{th}},6^{\mathrm{th}},9^{\mathrm{th}})$ st. You will have a total of 240 (264, 280, 300) sts. Begin working corrugated rib as follows: Every rd: \*K2 with MC, P2 with CC, repeat $^{\star}\!\bullet^{\star}$ Note: Be sure to always carry CC across the back of your work. (ln other words, you will $\approx\pmb{\upkappa}\pmb{2}$ with MC, bring CC to front of work, P2 with CC, bring CC to back of work\*, repeat $\^{\star}\!\bullet.$ Continue in corrugated rib until body measures $\pmb{4}^{\infty}$ Next rd: Knit with MC, placing a marker for the side after 120 (132, 140, 150) sts. (Use a marker that is a different color than your end-of-round marker.) Continue knitting even with MC until body measures 13%" (14%", 14%", 15%). Next rd: Knit to 6 sts before side marker, BO 12, Knit to 6 sts before end of rd, BO 6. Next rd: BO 6, knit to armhole opening, slip the next 108 (120, 128, 138) sts onto a piece of scrap yarn for the back yoke. Note: You will now be working back and forth on the front sts only. Front Yoke: Next row (Ws): Purl. Continue working even in stockinette until front measures $19\%^{n}$ $(20\%^{\circ}$ 21", 22"), ending so that next row worked wil haveRSfacing. Begin working neckopening asfollows: Next row: Knit 39 (44,47. 51). attach a second ball of yaandknit thnex0333ssthnl them onto a holder, then knit the remaining 39 (44, 47, 51) sts. You willbe working both shoulders simultaneously, as follows: Decrease 1 st at each neck edge on the next 6 rows. Thendecreasestatachneckedeny other row (on RS rows), 4 times. You will have 29 (34, 37, 41) sts remaining on each shoulder. Work even until front measures $22^{\circ}~(23^{\circ},~23\%^{\circ},$ 24%'), ending so next row wilhave RS facing. Slip all sts onto holders. Back Yoke: Put the back yoke sts onto the needle from the scrap yarn. Beginning with a Rs row, work even in stockinette untilbackrmeasures $22^{\circ}~(23^{\circ},~23\%^{\circ},~24\%^{\circ})$ ,ending so that next row has Rs facing. Next row:Sp29 (34,37,41) sts toholder forRig shoudeli0554ssldefobak neck, slip 29 (34, 37, 41) sts to holder for Left shoulder. Knit together and bind off shoulder seams on Ws, as follows: Slip one set of front shoulder sts onto one needle. Slip one set of the back shoulder sts onto another needle. Hold these two needles so that the RS are together and you're looking at the Ws.Using a $3^{r d}$ needle, knit together and bind off as follows: Insert needle through1 st on the front needle and1st on the back needle, and knit these 2 sts together. Repeat for the next st on the front and back needle, then lift the first st on the right needle over the $2^{n d}$ st to bind of as you would in ordinary knitting. Continue working in this manner to the end of the row. Collar: Using MC and $16^{\circ}$ circular needle, with Rs facing, knit the 50 (52, 54, 56) sts from back neck holder, PU16 stsfromfneck edgenit the303436)stsfromfrontneckholderPU6stsfromight neck edge. You will have a total of 112(116, 120, 124) sts, Join and work in corrugated rib for $z^{\mathfrak{n}}$ Knit 3 rounds in MC. Next rd: BO all sts.
Sleeves:
With MC and dp needles, CO 48 (48, 52, 52) sts. Divide on 3 or 4 needles, join and knit 3 rds. Work in corrugated rib for $z^{\ast}$ Next rd: Knit with MC, increasing 12 (12, 13, 13) sts evenly spaced, by knitting in to the front and back of every $4^{\dim}$ st. You will have a total of 60 (60, 65, 65) sts. Continue knitting with MC, increasing. $\widehat{\sf7}$ st at the beginning and end of every $4^{t h}$ rd until you have a total of 108 (108, 115, 115) sts. Note: Once you have enough sts you can transfer work to your $16^{\circ}$ circular needle. Work even until sleeve measures $17\%$ $18^{\circ}$ ,18%”, $199)$ Note: Sleeve length is highly individual, and is affected by the fit of the body. I strongly recommend that you finish the body and try it on. With arm extended, measure the length from wristbone to shoulder seam. Next rd: BO all sts.
Finishing:
Block sweater by laying it flat between 2 damp towels overnight. Sew sleeves onto body. Weave in loose ends. Embellish With I-Cord (optional): Work 2 pieces of I-Cord, as follows: With cC, on dp needles, CO 3 sts. Row 1: Slide these sts to the right end of the needle and then knit them. Repeat Row 1 until I-Cord is approx. $\mathbf{20^{\ast}}$ $\mathbf{\Omega}^{20^{\circ}}$ 21", 21") long. Slip the 3 sts onto a safety pin and leave an $\pmb{8}^{*}$ tail. Sew I-Cord onto sweater as follows: Starting at the underarm, lay the i-Cord along the sleeve at the seam where it joins the body. Using CC and a darning needle, sew l-Cord onto the sleeve. Unravel any extra I-Cord and draw the tail through the 3 sts. Tie off. Weave in loose ends.
