Olympic Spirit Hat by B.Kreb

This hat was inspired by the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Rowan released its new Pure Wool Worsted in January 2014 and I couldn't wait to swatch and knit something new. This simple to knit hat screams Team USA. Glossary: K = Knit; P = Purl; K2Tog = Knit 2 sts together; P2Tog = Purl 2 sts together; PM = Place Marker; SM = Slip Marker; St(s) = Stitches; 2 X 2 Rib = Knit 2, Purl 2; Materials: 3 skeins Rowan Pure Wool Worsted (100 grams, 219 yards, 100% Pure Wool) Sample knit in (A) Cardinal #136 & (B) Ivory #101; (C) Oxford # 148; 1 stitch marker; US Size 7 - 16" circular needle and double points or size needed to obtain gauge. Gauge: 6.5 sts = 1" in 2 x 2 rib or 20 sts = 4" in stockinette stitch. Size: The rib stitch in this pattern is extremely elastic. Due to the elasticity of the hat, size changes are made by adjusting the length versus the number of cast-on stitches. If head size is over 23” increase the cast-on by 4 sts and add 1 additional inch before decreasing. Techniques: Crochet Cast-On: Check out instructions for a crochet cast-on in Sally Melville's "Knit Stitch" or the You-Tube @ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vj_1S54hbPY Jogless Color Change: On color change rounds, change colors by knitting the first stitch of the new color as you usually would. Then, knit the rest of the stitches to the end of the round. On the next round, slip the first stitch of the new color, then knit the rest of the stitches. On every following round, knit every stitch as usual. Using Color A cast-on 120 stitches using the crochet cast-on method. Place Marker. Join being careful not to twist. K2, P2 for 12 rounds. Change to Color B using the Jogless Color Change Copyright 2014 Amazing Threads. All Rights Reserved. Change to Color C using Jogless Color Change method and continue in K2, P2 rib for 12 rounds. Continue in K2, P2 rib, changing every 5 rows from Colors A, to B, to C. When Hat measures 6.5" (8.5") from cast-on begin decrease rounds as follows, maintaining the color changes as outlined every 5 rounds. HINT: If you need to change color on Row 7, DO NOT K2tog in the first decrease after the marker so that you can slip the first stitch. Begin Row 8 with a K2tog for the first 2 sts ONLY. Decrease Rounds: Row 1: K2, P2, K2, P2tog, repeat around. Row 2: K2, P2, K2, P1, repeat around. Row 3: K2, P2tog, K2, P1, repeat around. Row 4: K2, P1, K2, P1, repeat around. Pom-Pom: Make a pom-pom that is at least 3" in diameter using equal amounts of each color. Visit this URL for a pom-pom tutorial. http://www.makeithandmade.com/2012/12/perfect-pompom-tutorial.html The pom-pom on the hat was made using a Clover Pom-Pom Maker.
