Crochet Patterns for Three Delicate Flowers: Pansy, Coneflower, and Daylily by Carol Schoenfelder

Three Flowers

designed by Carol Schoenfelder To have something to show for Ravelymics 2010, I decided to write up patterns for three flowers. The pattern for the pansy was already written up (but not as a pdf) before the Olympics started. The other two were crocheted and written up during the last few days of the Winter Olympics. I wanted to have a green flower and also a yellow flower (Dollhouse reference). So, I chose a coneflower and a daylily for the other two flowers. Allthre flowers can be made in shades other than the ones I selected. The pictured flowers use worsted weight cotton and a size 5 or F (3.75 mm) hook. But, the patterns would work well for any size yarn or thread and a hook to match. The Pansy is the easiest to crochet. The daylily is the hardest.

Abbreviations:

ch - chain SC - single crochet sk - skip hdc - half double crochet dc - double crochet tr - triple crochet sl- slip stitch sp - space rnd -round

Pansy

The pansy pictured is worked with Peaches & Creme cotton yarn - worsted weight --in yellow and blue. Yellow is the color for the center and the first 2 petals. (Five is a Fibonacci number.) The flower is about $3\,\%\,"$ in diameter.

Instructions:

Ch 4. Join to form ring. Rnd 1: Ch 7, \* dc 1, ch 4 \* 4x, join with slip stitch to 3rd st of ch 7. (5 spokes)

Rnd 2: In each of the first 2 loops work "sc1,hdc1, dc1,tr 3, dc1, hdc1, sc1". If desired, change colors. In each of the remaining 3 loops work "sc 1, ch 3, tr 2, dc 1, tr 2, ch 3, sc 1". Fasten off and weave in the ends. Note: There are several ways to change colors. One way is to fasten off the old color and then start with the new. However, for this pansy, I changed colors by just starting to crochet with the new color. For that method, for the last sc of the second petal, don't draw a loop of yellow through to complete the sc. Instead draw a loop of blue through. Note also: Just as the ch3 (the first part of the ch 7at the beginning of round 1) is a substitute for dc 1, "'sc 1, ch 3" and "ch 3, sc 1" (in Rnd 2) are substitutes for tr 1.

Coneflower

The coneflower is shown in Peaches & Creme worsted-weight cotton in light green. (l chose thirteen as the number of petals after studying pictures of coneflowers and then remembering that thirteen is a Fibonacci number and Fibonacci numbers show up a lot in nature.) The flower is about 5" in diameter.

Instructions: Ch 6. Join to form ring. Rnd 1: Ch10, sk1, sc1, dc6, sc1(first petal complete),\*sc1into ch6 ring, ch9, sk1, sc1, dc6, sc 1 (next petal complete), repeat from \* 11 more times for a total of 13 petals. Fasten off and weave in loose end.

Daylily

The daylily is shown in Peaches & Creme worstedweight cotton in yellow. It could be worked just as well in two, three, or even four colors. The three back petals are crocheted much like those of the Coneflower. The three front petals are worked in lace. Both sets of petals are worked off of Rnd 1 - the back petals using back loops (of the sc and middle dc) and the front petals using the corresponding front loops.

Pattern illustration

The flower is about 5" in diameter. Instructions: Ch 6. Join to form ring. Rnd 1: Ch 3, \* dc 2, hdc1, sc1, hdc 1, dc 1, repeat from \* once more, dc2, hdc1, sc 1, hdc1. Join. Back Petal Rnd 1: (Change color if desired.) Sc1in back loop of first dc of Rnd 1. \* Ch 4, sk 2, dc in back loop (of next sc). Work petal: ch 5, sk1, sc 4, sc in top of front loop of dc. Ch 4, sk 2, sc in back loop (of dc st), repeat from \* twice more. Back petal Rnd 2: Sc3 in ch4 sp. Single crochet around petal as follows: Sc 4, sc 3 in top st of petal, sc 4. Sc 3 in ch 4 sp. Sc in sc. Front Petal Rnd 1: (Change color if desired.) Dc 1 in front loop of first dc of Rnd 1. (The picture shows the flower after this first dc.) Ch 3, dc in same st (ie, the first dc of Rnd 1). \* Ch 3, sk 2, sc in front loop (of next sc), ch 3, sk 2, dc in front loop (of middle dc), ch 3, dc in front loop of same st, repeat from \* once more. Ch 3, sk 2, sc in front loop (of next sc), ch 3, sk 2, dc in front loop (of middle dc), ch 2, sc 1 into first st of rnd.

Front Petal Rnd 2: \* Ch4, dc1(into ch3loop), ch4,sc1(into dc), sc2(into ch3sp), sc1(into sc), sc 2 (into ch 3 sp), sc 1 (into dc), repeat from \* twice more. Front Petal Rnd 3:(Change color if desired.) \* (Hdc 1, dc 2, ch1, dc 3) into ch 4 sp, ch 1, (dc 3, ch 1, dc 2, hdc 1) into ch 4 sp, sc 1 (into sc), sl stitch into next 5 sc's, sc 1 (into sc), repeat from \* twice more. On the last repeat, omit the last sc. Fasten off and weave in loose ends. Enjoy.
