MATERIALS:
685 yards Chunky or Bulky weight yarn (14 stitches per 4 inches) for full-sleeved version; 548 yards for mid-sleeved version or double-stranded Worsted weight (double the necessary yardage, and bear in mind that there are thick cables here - I recommend swatching a C5B cable to make sure you want to double yourWorsted)
Recommended needle size:
10.5 US circular needles (gauge is more important than needle size) Cable needle Waste yarn Tapestry needle Blocking materials One button GAUGE: 14 stitches by $20\ \mathrm{rows}=4$ inches
PATTERN NOTES:
C5B - Cable 5 back - Place five stitches onto the cable needle and let it drop to the back of your work. Knit the next five stitches, then knit the stitches off of the cable needle. C2B - Cable 2 back - Place two stitches onto the cable needle and let it drop to the back of your work. Knit the next two stitches, then knit the stitches off of the cable needle. Pick up stitches - Knitty.com has a great article on this by Theresa Vinson Stenersen. http://knitty.com/ISSUEwinter04/FEATwin04TT.html I just squeezed a smaller needle through the sides of my knitting. If you don't use Theresa’'s method, and you just decide to squeeze through, it's definitely a lot easier with a 9 US or smaller circular needle.
PATTERN:
Segment A
Left front:
Cast on 15 stitches. Row 1, 3: P1, K10, P1, K1, P1, K1 Row 2 and all even rows: knit alknits, purl llpurls(i.e. K1, P10, K1, Pl, K1, P1) Row 5: P1, C5B, P1, K1, P1, K1 Row 7, 9, 11: Knit as Row 1 Row 13: Knit as Row 5 Repeat Rows 7 through 14. Then knit Rows 7 through 11. Wrap your yarn around your needle five times (to measure an adequate length for weaving in), and cut a smidge past that.
Back (brackets used to offet rib pattern from cables):
CO 56 stitches Row 1, 3: [K1, P1, K1, P1,] K10, [P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1,] K10, [P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1,] K10, [P1, K1, P1, K1] Row 2 and all evenrows kit all knits, purl all puls Row 5: [K1, P1, K1, P1,] C5B, [P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1,] C5B, [P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1,] C5B, [P1, K1, P1, K1] Row 7, 9, 11: Knit as Row 1 Row 13: Knit as Row 5 Repeat Rows 7 through 14. Then knit Rows 7 through 11. Wrap your yarn around your needle five times (to measure an adequate length for weaving in), and cut a smidge past that.
Right Front:
CU 15 stitches. Row 1, 3: K1, P1, K1, P1, K10, P1 Row 2 and all even rows: knit all knits, purl all purls Row 5: K1, P1, K1, P1, C5B, P1 Row 7, 9, 11: Knit as Row 1 Row 13: Knit as Row 5 Repeat Rows 7 through 14. Then knit Rows 7 through 11. Do not cut your yarn. Now you will continue to knit more of the body all together. Still working with your uncut yarn from the right front, continue the patterns. Repeat Rows 12 through 14 for all sections. Then knit Rows 7 through 14 (38 rows so far, 86 stitches total). Wrap your yarn around your needle five times (to measure an adequate length for weaving in), and cut a smidge past that. Place all live stitches on spare yarn. If you have a second pair of 10.5 US circular needles, you may opt to leave your stitches on the current circular needle, but I do not recommend this. It's difficult to knit the collar when you're fighting another circular needle.
Segment B
Collar:
Either sew together the shoulders (match up the front cables to the outer cables on the middle), or provisionally secure them together using crochet or pins. Pick up stitches, holding the right side of the cardigan in front of you, and working from the right side, across the back, and down the left. This will create the collar. (102 stitches total) If you choose not to seam the shoulders at this time, pick up 38 stitches along the right, then pick up your middle 26 stitches from the back (your middle cable, and 8 stitches on either side), and finish by picking up another 38 stitches on the left side. (102 stitches total) Row 1 (wrong side): P1, K1, P1, K1, [P4, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1], repeat brackets to the last 8 stitches, P4, K1, P1, K1, P1 Row2: K1, P1, K1, P1,[C2B, P1, K1, P1, K1, P], repeat brackets to the last 8 stitches, C2B, P1, K1, P1, K1 Repeat Rows 1 through 2 eleven times, then work another Row 1 (total of 25 rows). Bind off collar. Pick up 26 stitches with the right side facing you, working right to left from one side of the collar, transfer live stitches from Segment A to the needle. With a second ball of yarn, pick up the remaining 26 stitches from the other side of the collar. (138 stitches total). Work one wrong side row as follows, switching the balls of yarn as they meet (bring the new ball behind, then over the first strand, so that they're wrapped before you start knitting with the new ball - afer a few rows, start using only one; with the other ball, wrap yarn around the needle five times to measure out a tail and cut it free): [P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1], P10, [K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1], P10, [K1, P1, K1, P2, K1, P1, K1], P10, [K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1], P10, [K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1], P10, [K1, P1, K1, P2, K1, P1, K1], P10, [K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1], P10, [K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1] This puts you back on the right side to work the torso section.
Segment C
Torso:
This portion revisits the C5B cables of Segment A. You will now have 7 cables, with ribbing on either side. To spell it out, I will use brackets around the ribbing portions. The segments which created the armholes will not be changed; these will have two knit stitches next to each other. This part is necessary for the bottom edge. For convenience, I am restating the patern using the Rows 7 - 14 numeration from the Segment A. Row 7, 9, 11: [K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1], K10, [P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1], K10, [P1, K1, P1, K2, P1, K1, P1], K10, [P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1], K10, [P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1], K10, [P1, K1, P1, K2, P1, K1, P1], K10, [P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1], K10, [P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1] Rows 8 and all even: knit all knits, purl all purls Row 13: Knit all knits, and purl all purls in ribbings, C5B all cables. For the buttonhole (you could opt to make a crochet loop on the edge instead; if you opt to do that, knit Rows 7 through 14 as normal, and skip this section of Segment C, going straight to "Repeat Rows 7 through 14 once more"): [K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1], K10, [P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1], K10, [P1, K1, P1, K2, P1, K1, P1], K10, [P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1], K10, [P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1], K10, [P1, K1, P1, K2, P1, K1, P1], K10, [P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1], K10, [P1, K1, bind off2, P1, K1, P1, K1] Work the following Row: [P1, K1, P1, K1, cast on 2, P1, K1], P10, [K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1], P10, [K1, P1, K1, P2, K1, P1, K1], P10, [K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1], P10, [K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1], P10, [K1, P1, K1, P2, K1, P1, K1], P10, [K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1], P10, [K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1] Then work Rows 9 through 14. Repeat Rows 7 through 14 once more. Knit Rows 7 through 11 (the bottom edge willstart on the wrong side).
Bottom edge:
This portion revisits the collar section in Segment B. Row 1 (wrong side): P1, K1, P1, K1, [P4, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1],repeat the brackets to the last 8 stitches, P4, K1, P1, K1, P1 Row 2: K1, P1, K1, P1, [C2B, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1] repeat the brackets to the last 8 stitches, C2B, P1, K1, P1, K1 Repeat Rows 1 through 2 six times, then work another Row 1 (total of 15 rows). Bind off.
Segment E
Sleeves:
Here, again, you have options. You could do short sleeves by picking up the stitches and doing a K1, P1 rib for a few rows and binding off. You could stop at the elbows. You could stop at $\%$ sleeves. You could stop at your wrists. Anything longer than the elbows is going to require an extra skein of yarn, because knitting to the elbows leaves you no extra, not even for a swatch. In any case, for sleeves, pick up 52 stitches. Either work in a K1, P1 pattern (decreasing on the $12^{\mathrm{th}}$ $\dot{2}2^{\mathrm{nd}}$ $32^{\mathrm{nd}}$ $42^{\mathrm{nd}}$ $52^{\mathrm{nd}}$ 1, $62^{\mathrm{nd}}$ and $72^{\mathrm{nd}}$ stitches for fulengthsleves indingoffater rows), or try the following (more small cables): Row 1: K1, P1, [C2B, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1], repeat brackets to last 5 stitches, C2B, P1 Row 2: K1, P1, [K4, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1], repeat brackets to last 5 stitches, K4, P1 Repeat Rows 1 through 2 four times, then work Row 1 again (11 rows total). Row 12: P2tog, [K4, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1], repeat brackets to last 5 stitches, K3, K2tog Row 13: P1, [C2B, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1], repeat brackets to last 4 stitches, C2B Row 14: P1, [K4, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1], repeat brackets to last 4 stitches, K4 Repeat Rows 13 through 14 three times, then work Row 13 again (21 rows total). Bind off. (This should bring you to a sleeve length of 16.5 inches, the standard length set forth by yarnstandards.com). Weave in ends. Block intensely, but carefully.
Button placement:
Since the back has three C5B, and the front side now has four, the button placement should be used to overlap the cables. To do this, place your button approximately 8 rows below collar, 6 stitches to the left (your left if you're wearing it, your right if it's facing you) of the cable on the edge of the left side of the cardigan. Your eighth row may look like your ninth, and that's okay. The best way to find out which row to set your button on is to count down from the collar to your buttonhole, and make sure that you count the other side the same way (so if you count pick up stitches on one side, do it for the other). Make sure to place it 6 stitches to the left of the cabie, though. Sew on your button, and wear!
Charts:
Dashes are purls, clear segments are knit. Pink segments are C5B. Purple segments are C2B. Wrong sides are omitted - knit the knits, purl the purls (i.e., knit what looks like a knit on this side, purl what looks like a purl on this side). All charts read left to right.
