Notes :
The pattern is written to start most rounds with 3 ch in place of a tr. I like to start with a false tr instead. Here is a link to how to do this : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yi3RR070CvQ It is fiddly when you first try, but I think the result is worth persevering for. I have written the pattern to start and end most corners in the middle of each corner. It may seem like an odd way to do it, but I think it gives a better result. 10 cm (4") block
Materials :
I used a 5mm hook and 8 ply acrylic yarn to make the pictured square. I do tend to crochet tighter than most, so you may have to go down a hook size or 2 if size is important. I made a 4 round standard Granny Square with this hook and yarn combo. My granny measured 5 mm hook (H / 8 US) = 10.5 cm
Stitches :
ch = chain htr = half treble ss = slip stitch tr = treble crochet dc = double crochet bptr = back post treble crochet bpdc = back post double crochet
Stitch Instructions
Ch 4, ss to first ch to form a ring, or start with a magic circle
Round 1
ch 1, 8 dc, ss to first dc (8dc)
Round 2
ch 1, dc in same space, [dc in next stitch, (dc, 2 ch, dc) in next stitch]x 3, dc in next stitch, dc in first space, 1 ch, join with dc into first dc (3 dc on each side, 4 x2chspaces)
Round 3
ch 1, dc in same space, [dc in next 3 stitches, (dc, 2 ch, dc) in 2 ch space] x 3, dc in next 3 stitches, dc in first space, 1 ch, join with dc into first dc (4 dc on each side, 4 x 2 ch spaces)
Round 4
3 ch (st ch), tr in same space, [skip 2 stitches, 5 tr in next stitch, skip 2 stitches, (2 tr, 2 ch, 2 tr) in 2 ch space] x 3, skip 2 stitches, 5 tr in next stitch, skip 2 stitches, 2 tr in 2 ch space, 1 ch, join with dc into the 3rd ch of st ch. (9 stitches on each side, 4 x 2 ch spaces)
Round 5
2 ch, htr in same space, [bptr around next 2 stitches, 2 ch, skip 2 stitches, bpdc around next stitch, 2 ch, skip 2 stitches, bptr around next 2 stitches, (2 htr, 2 ch, 2 htr) in 2 ch space] x 3, around next 2 stitches, 2 ch, skip 2 stitches, bpdc around next stitch, 2 ch, skip 2 stitches, bptr around next 2 stitches, 2 htr in 2 ch space, 1 ch, join with dc into the 2nd ch of st ch (9 stitches along each side, 2 2 ch spaces along each side, 4 x 2 ch corner spaces)
Round 6
1 ch, dc in same space, dc in each stitch, 2 dc in each 2 ch space, 3 dc in 2 ch spaces, 2 dc in first corner, join with ss into first dc. Fasten off yarn and weave in ends. (13 dc along sides, 4 x 3 dc corners) Pattern not to be reproduced or resold.
