Abbreviations:
K = knit P = purl Sts = stitches Rep = repeat Stockinette stitch = knit a row, purl a row Garter stitch = knit every row Kfb = knit into front and back of stitch K2tog = knit 2 stitches together P2tog = purl 2 stitches together Second Increase: (right side) \* K8, increase in next 2 sts (kfb); rep from \* to end = 108 sts Beginning with a purl row, work 5 rows in stockinette stitch Next Row: (right side, decrease) \* K8, K2tog, K2tog; rep from \* to end = 90 sts Next Row: P across all sts
Main Piece:
With 3.25mm straight needles and main color, begin at lower edge and cast on 46sts (1 used the long tail cast on method). Work 2 rows of garter stitch (Variation: Use a contrast colored yarn) Beginning with a knit row, work 2 rows in stockinette stitch (Variation: If garter stitch rows are worked in main color, use a contrast colored yarn on these two rows as shown in first picture)
Shape Crown:
Row 1: (right side)\* K8, K2tog; rep from \* to end = 81 sts Rows 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14: P across all sts Row 3: \* K7, K2tog; rep from \* to end = 72 sts Row 5: \* K6, K2tog; rep from \* to end = 63 sts Row 7: \* K5, K2tog; rep from \* to end = 54 sts First Increase: (right side) K1, \* increase in next stitch (kfb); rep from \* to last stitch, K1 = 90 sts (Variation: Use a contrast colored yarn for this row as shown in second picture) Row 9: \* K4, K2tog; rep from \* to end = 45 sts Beginning with a purl row, work 3 rows in stockinette stitch Row 11: \* K3, K2tog; rep from \* to end = 36 sts Row 13: \* K2, K2tog; rep from \* to end = 27 sts Newsboy Cap by Debonair Designs 2006 - 2011. To Finish:
Break yarn and thread through remaining stitches, drawing up firmly and fasten off. Join seam, turn right side out. (I added decorative button on top as pictured)
Cap Peak:
Beginning at inner edge, and main color, cast on 20 sts (Variation: Use a contrast colored yarn) Row 1: (right side) K2, \* increase in next stitch (kfb), K2; rep from \* to end = 26 sts Rows 2 - 3: Beginning with a purl row, work in stockinette stitch (Variation: Change to main color on last row if contrast was used) Row 4: (wrong side) K across all sts to mark outer edge fold line Rows 5 - 6: Beginning with a knit row, work in stockinette stitch Next Row: (right side) K2, \* K2tog, K2; rep from \* to end = 20 sts Cast off. Gather up each set of row ends and fasten off. With right side facing, oversew cast on and cast off edges together. Sew this oversewn seam to the garter stitch rows on main cap piece at center front.
