Instructions

As this beanie is knit from the top down and increases very quickly, I recommend not pulling the centre hole shut until you have been able to knit a few inches in the round. With the 4mm crochet hook and using Emily Ocker's Cast on, cast on 8(9, 10) stitches. Transfer these stitches to your long cable or dpn. Increase round 1 - kfb into every stitch. 16(18, 20) stitches total. Knit 2 rounds. Increase round 2 - kfb into every stitch. 32(36, 40) stitches total. Knit 2 rounds. Increase round 3 - kfb into every stitch. 64(72, 80) stitches. Knit 2 rounds. Size 14" - continue onto body of hat. Size 16" and 18" - continue onto increase round 4. Increase round 4- \*k o(18, 10), m1l. Repeat from \* to end of round. o(4, 8) stitches increased. 64(76, 88) stitches total.

Body of hat

After knitting for a few inches you should be able to change from the long cable/dpn to the 30cm and then the 4ocm circular needle (for the bigger sizes). You will need to add a SORM marker when you do this. Continue knitting around until hat measures from caston:- 2.5/6.5 (3.25/8.5, 3.75/9.5) inches/cm

Making the butterfly

Round 1 - Knit 34(38, 44) stitches, pm, k1, bring yarn to the front, slip the next 15(15, 17) stitches purlwise, bring the yarn to the back (loosely across the slipped stitches) and knit to end of round. (Make sure that the yarn brought across is loose and has slack.) Rounds 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 - Knit. Round 3 - Knit to marker, sm, k2, bring yarn to the front, slip the next 13(13, 15) stitches purlwise, bring the yarn to the back and knit to end of round. Round 5 - Knit to marker, sm, k3, bring yarn to the front, slip the next 11(11, 13) stitches purlwise, bring the yarn to the back and knit to end of round. Round 7 - Knit to marker, sm, k4, bring yarn to the front, slip the next 9(9, 11) stitches purlwise, bring the yarn to the back and knit to end of round. Round 9 - Knit to marker, sm, k3, bring yarn to the front, slip the next 11(11, 13) stitches purlwise, bring the yarn to the back and knit to end of round. Round 11 - Knit to marker, sm, k2, bring yarn to the front, slip the next 13(13, 15) stitches purlwise, bring the yarn to the back and knit to end of round. Round 13 - Knit to marker, sm, k1, bring yarn to the front, slip the next 15(15, 17) stitches purlwise, bring the yarn to the back and knit to end of round. Round 15 - knit to marker, sm, k 8(8, 9) stitches. From above, bring the left needle under all the strands of yarn and knit the next stitch. This will join all the strands together in a single stitch forming the 'butterfly'. Knit to end of round.

Garter brim

Change to 3.25mm needle

Knit a round Round 1 - Knit. Round 2 - Purl. Repeat rounds1& 2 4 more times for a total of 10 rows.

Finishing

Pull the tail of the cast on to close up the hole. Weave in ends. Block the hat. I find the easiest way is to soak the hat, then blow up a balloon to an inch or two less than diameter of the head you are knitting for and place the beanie over the balloon and let it dry. Make sure you do not over stretch the brim. Wear the hat with the butterfly above one side of the forehead.

Cast off instructions

Knit 1 stitch. \*(Return that stitch to the left needle. cast on 1st, cast off 1 st, move that stitch back to the left needle) x 2, cast off 3 st. Rep from \* until all stitches have been cast off.
