Every summer, beading publications unveil “beach sandals" which are really bead anklets that loop around the toe. They are meant to be worn at the beach to provide a stylish accent to sun worshipping. Lately as I've been obsessed with sock knitting, I've accumulated several leftover bits of sock yarn. I thought that making a knitting equivalent of these fun beach sandals would be a crazy way to use up these little extras! SIZE One size

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS

5.25 inches wide, 10.25 inches long from tip of toe loop to the end of the sandal ties.

MATERIALS

Koigu KPPPM [100% merino wool; 175 yd/160 m per 50g skein]; color: P132; 1 skein for all sizes 1 set US #1/2.25mm double-point needles 1 set US #1/2.25mm straight needles stitch holder tapestry needle GAUGE 32 sts/43 rows $=$ 4" in stockinette stitch using size 1 needles

PATTERN NOTES

This pattern is a great way to use up leftover sock yarn. You can substitute with any sock yarn that is a similar gauge to Koigu KPPPM. The sole free sandal as written will fit a woman's size 6-1o shoe size. To make it smaller, do one less pattern repeat in the body of the sandal. To make it larger, simply add a pattern repeat.

PATTERN Toe Loop

CO 8 sts with the straight needles. Knit three rows. On next row, work four sts, and place on a DPN. Work the rest of the row onto another DPN. Using the four sts just worked, knit 1.5 inches of I-cord. Leave the sts on the DPN, and cut yarn. Reattach yarn onto the 4 sts held on the first DPN. Knit 1.5 inches of I-cord. Purl one row on the i-cord that you are currently working. Combine 8 sts on one straight needle. Knit four rows.

Body of the Sandal Begin the pattern repeat.
