Size P crochet hook One set of large purse handles, here I used a pair of 9" circular wooden handles (see my hint and tip guide for where to get the purse handles) FABRIC AND FABRIC STRIP WIDTH: about 5-6 yards total of fabric in desired color palette or completely random, make fabric strips approx. 1-1.25" wide for a size P crochet hook.... A rule of thumb that I go by (only by making so many of these rag bag purses) is that the width of the fabric strip should be about the width of the knitting needle OR the crochet hook!!! ribbon: mixture of .5", 1.0" and 1.5" wide grosgrain ribbons GAUGE: 5 SC = 3", 9 roWS SC = 6" FINISHED SIZE OF LARGE TOTE: Base of purse is approx. 18" wide x 14" deep

1. Prepare fabric for crocheting. Follow the directions listed on the attached guidesheet!
\*taAs you are crocheting, keep in mind tha you will be knitting a large rectangle. Once the rectangle is large enough, you will be folding it up in half. To make your large, 18"x28" rectangle Directions:
Abbreviations: sc = single crochet ch = chain stitch Hook Size: Heather Knitz presents... "Preppy and Sassy Knitting Patterns" NOTE: Gauge can be highly variable depending on your tension and the fabric that is used. Ch 30 stitches (foundation chain). Starting in 2nd ch, sc across (29 sc). Ch 1 and turn. Sc across crocheting into the back loop of each sc in the row below (29 sc)- Continue to stitch rows of 29 sc until you have a rectangle that measures approximately 28" in length (or approx. 34 - 38 rows)- Fasten off. 2. Now you are ready to finish the purse. With some of the left over fabric you have cut up many, 12" strips of fabric. 3. Fold up your purse in half. 4. Lay down purse flat, folded. Lay the strips out alongside the purse approximately 2 inches apart.
5. Using the strips tie the two ends of the purse together-the top of the purse will remain open. The fold will become the bottom of your purse! You will use five ties on the left side and five ties on the right side. Just slide the piece of fabric in one hole of each end (the front and the back) of the purse and tie a double knot--it really is that easy! \*\*\*TIP\*\*Leave the ties hanging out OR you can trim them. I personally like them hanging out--it really adds to the texture and charm of the rag bag look! Since the purse is about ten inches deep, space out the ties by about 2 inches. When you have finished this step, there should be an opening at the

A rule of thumb that I go by (only by making so many of these rag bag purses) is that the width of the fabric strip should be about the width of the knitting needle OR the crochet hook!!! \*\*\*Please note that to make this purse I used 2 different lilly fabrics, one different fabric for each square.\*\*\* ribbon: 1.5" wide lime green mini polka dot grosgrain ribbon (about 1.5 yds for this purse) GAUGE: 5 sC = 3", 9 roWS SC = 6" FINISHED SIZE OF LARGE TOTE: Base of purse is approx. 12" wide x 12" deep 1. Prepare fabric for crocheting. Follow the directions listed on the attached guide sheet (see page 5 in the hint and tip guide specifically)! The HINT and TIP GUIDE will tell you how to prepare the fabric, attach the handles and make the purse liner!!!
\*\*\*\* As you are crocheting, keep in mind that you will be creating 2 separate squares that will compile your purse! You actually have a lot of creative control with this purse. If you want a LARGER purse, make 2 additional squares in the manner that the pattern calls for.\*\*\*\*\*
2. You will make 2 "patchwork" style squares, each approximately 12"x 12", following these instructions: 12" Square Directions Abbreviations: sc = single crochet Page 9

Hook Size: Size P crochet hook Gauge: 5 sc = 3" 8 or 9 rows sc = 6" NOTE: Gauge can be highly variable depending on your tension and the fabric that is used. Ch 22 stitches (foundation chain). Starting in 2nd ch, sc across (21 sc). Ch 1 and turn. Sc across crocheting into the back loop of each sc in the row below (21 sc). Continue to stitch rows of 21 sc until you have a square...approximately 16 - 18 rows. Fasten off. After you have made 2 squares (or the amount that you have increased to), lay the squares out (two at a time) flat. 3. Now you are ready to finish the purse. With some of the left over fabric you have cut up MANY, 10" strips of fabric. It is time for the fun part...tying up the seams of the purse. To affix all of these crocheted squares together, you are simply going to tie the squares together using knots! Yes, it really is that easy 4. With the squares flat , lay the strips out alongside the purse approximately 2 inches apart (in the picture is a knit version of a square, but it is Identical to the crochet square). You will be tying the two squares together to create the bottom of the purse first. Use about 6-7 ties to secure the bottom of the purse.
5. Now you are ready to tie up the left seam and the right seam of the purse. I used about 6-7 ties to secure the bottom and then 3-4 on each end of the purse. AGAiN, there is no sewing here...you will simply tie about every two inches the front and the back of the purse together using a fabric strip. \*\*\*TIP.\*\* Leave the ties hanging out OR you can trim them. I personally like them hanging out--it really adds to the texture and charm of the rag bag look! Since the purse is about 18 inches deep, space out the ties by about 2 inches. When you have finished this step, there should be an opening at the

Check out the hint and tip guide for exact directions on how to attach the handles...choose from u-shaped, d-shaped or circular purse handles! 7. Lay the purse down flat and then lay the purse handle along the top edge. \*\*You may want to use a ruler to measure the center of the purse.\*\*\*I then lay out the five strips out to properly spread them out across the purse handle. 8. Just as you tied the sides of the purse together with double knots, you will again literally tie the purse and handle together. I tied the ribbon into double knotted bows in the pink and green fabric purse. For specific details on handle attachment, see the hint and tip guide that matches the handles you will be using!!! 9. If you want to make a simple broadcloth liner, follow my SIMPLE steps on that also in the hint and tip guide! 10. Congratulations!!! You have now created your very own fabric rag bag large tote!
