Batman Knitted Toy By Stana D. Sortor

Disclaimer: This kniting pattern was design by me. The toy was inspired by Batman, which is copyrighted character of DC Comics. Finished Toy size: Approximately 10" tall (26cm) Yarn: Approximately 1oz each of black, grey, yellow medium weight yarn. I used Caron Simply Soft Black #9727, Grey Heather # 9509, Lemonade # 9776, and also small amount of soft peach color for face, remnants of white and red yarn. Recommended Needles size: Double pointed needles US #5/3.75mm (set of 5) Notions: Yarn needle, crochet hook, stitch holders, scissors, stitch marker, polyester fiberfil(1 small bag), Abbreviations: KFB = Knit in front and back of the same st, this creates 2sts from 1st. SSK= slip st, slip st and knit the 2sts together, this decreases 2sts to 1st. K3tog = knit the yarn through 3sts together, this decreases 3sts to 1sts PFB = Purl in front and back of the same st, this creates 2sts from 1st. Techniques: Seed stitch: Must be even number of stitches. Row 1: \*Knit 1, Purl 1; repeat from \* to end of row Row 2: \*Purl 1, Knit 1; repeat from \* to end of row To create seed stitch repeat row 1 and 2 for pattern. Gauge: 18sts & 27 rows = 4" in stockinette stitch.
INSTRUCTIONS:
First Leg:
With black yarn and three double pointed needles cast on 8sts. (3 or 2sts. per needle) Place a stitch marker on the first st, and begin working in the round. Row 1: Knit around (8sts. total) Row 2: KFB all around, 6 or 4sts per needle (16sts. total) Row 3 - 10: Knit around (16sts total) Cut the black yarn, attach the grey yarn Row 11- 23: Knit around (16sts total) Cut the grey yarn, attach the black yarn Row 20: Knit around (16sts. total), transfer the sts to 2 needles (or use the stitch holders), 8sts per needle, Cut the yarn, leaving long enough tail.
Second Leg:
With black yarn and three double pointed needles cast on 8sts. (3 or 2sts. per needle) Place a stitch marker on the first st, and begin working in the round. Row 1: Knit around (8sts. total) Row 2: KFB all around, 6 or 4sts per needle (16sts. total) Row 3 - 10: Knit around (16sts total) Cut the black yarn, attach the grey yarn Row 11- 23: Knit around (16sts total) Cut the grey yarn, attach the black yarn Row 20: Knit around (16sts. total), transfer the sts to 2 needles, 8sts per needle.
Continue with Body:
Row 21: Knit 8sts from the first needle with second leg, knit 8sts from the first needle with the first leg, continue with the next 8 sts from the first leg and finish the row with 8 sts from the second leg (32sts. total) Thread the tail of yarn from the cast on stitches on a yarn needle. Stitch through all of the cast on stitches, pull up tight to close the hole, and stitch to secure. Begin to stuff the legs With fiberfill. Row 22 - 23: Knit around 2 rows (32sts total), Cut the black yarn, and attach the yellow yarn. Row 24 - 26: Knit around 3 rows (32sts total), Cut the yellow yarn, and attach the grey yarn. Row 27 - 42: Knit around 16 rows (32sts. total) Continue stuffing the toy with fiberfill. Cut the grey yarn, and attach the black yarn.
Continue with Head:
Row 43: Knit around 1 row (32sts. total) in black yarn. Attach the peach color yarn for face and work with both yarns in intarsia technique in the round. \* Row 44 - 51: Work in intarsia technique, see the chart for the face, or follow the row by row instruction. Row 52 - 57: Knit around 6rows (32sts. total) Row 58: \*SSK, knit 6; repeat from \* around, 7sts per needle (28sts total) Row 59: \*Knit 2, SSK, knit 3; repeat from \* around, 6sts per needle (24sts total) Row 60: \*Knit 3, SSK, knit 1; repeat from \* around, 5sts per needle (20sts total) Row 61: \*SSK, knit 3; repeat from \* around, 4sts per needle (16sts total) Row 62: \*Knit 2, SSK; repeat from \* around, 3sts per needle (12sts total) Finish stuffing. Cut the yarn, leaving long enough tail, and thread the end on a yarn needle. Pull the end through the remaining stitches on needle, gather up and close the hole, stitch to secure. Thread the tail of yarn from the top of the first leg on a yarn needle. Stitch through the stitches in between the two legs to close the hole, and stitch to secure. \* If you are not sure how to do intarsia in the round, I would suggest to look for tutorial on YouTube, there are some great tutorials that explain the process step by step.

Arms (make 2) :
With grey yarn and three double pointed needles and cast on 12sts. (4sts. per needle) Place a stitch marker on the first st, and begin working in the round. Row 1 - 11: Knit around 11 rows (12sts. total) Begin to stuff the arm with fiberfil. Cut the grey yarn and attach the black yarn. Row 13 - 18: Knit around 6rows (12sts total) Row 17: SSK all around (6sts total) Finish stuffing. Cut the yarn, leaving long enough tail, and thread the end on a yarn needle. Pull the end through the remaining stitches on needles, gather up and close the hole, stitch to secure. Thread the tail from the cast on sts on a yarn needle and sew the arms on the side of the toy, using the picture as a guide.
Points on head (make 2):
With black yarn and two double pointed needles and cast on 10sts. (5sts. per needle) Place a stitch marker on the first st, and begin working in the round. Pull the end through the remaining stitches on needles, gather up and close the hole, stitch to secure. Thread the tail from the cast on sts on a yarn needle and sew the points to the top of the cape on the head, using the picture as a guide.
Cape:
With crochet hook or DPN pick up 19sts in the back of the toy at the black row for the neck. Cut the yarn, leaving long enough tail, and thread the end on a yarn needle, weave in the ends.

Emblem on chest:
With the yellow yarn and two double pointed needles using as straight needles cast on 6sts Row 1: Knit (6sts total) Row 2: PFB, P 4, PFB (8sts total) Row 3: KFB, Knit 6, KFB (10sts total) Row 4: Purl (10sts total) Row 5: SSK, Knit 6, K2tog (8sts total) Row 6: P2tog, P4, P2tog (6sts total) Row 7: Knit and bind off. Sew the yellow oval on the chest of the toy, using the picture as a guide. With black yarr embroider the shape of bat, and a thin line around the oval, using the picture as a guide.
Finishing:
Cut a long piece of black yarn and thread it on a yarn needle. Begin by one arm and weave the yarn in and out around the toy's neck, tight the two ends of the yarn together to shape the neck. Embroider the face, using the picture as a guide. Use the white and black yarn for the eyes, black yarn for the nose the nose cover, and red yarn for the mouth.
