Knit up a little necklace this spring! Delicate yet quick to make up, this beaded choker necklace is a "clover lace" pattern with a crochet bind off. Great for gifts! You can personalize it with a pendant of your choice, or leave it delicate and understated. The pattern can be extended to use as a trim or edging on garments as well. Make it bridal with white silk and pearls, or go sparkly with crystals and gemstones - your imagination is the only limit! Knowledge of lace, beading, and very basic crochet skills will have you on your way to a great little accessory in no time!
General Information
Size:
As given, the base necklace can be blocked to about 14 - 14.5 inches. With the extension chain, as shown in the green version, it can be extended to about 16 inches.
Materials:
One skein DMC “Pearl Cotton, Size 5", shade no. 988 (used in green necklace), or about 18 yards of Halcyon Yarn's "2/12 Gemstone Silk", color no. 114 (used in purple necklace). 25 size 6/o glass beads in “Metallic Gold" You may wish to have extra beads on hand if you would like to incorporate them into creating pendants as I did in the samples. A pendant of your choice (optional) One jewelry clasp of your choice, I used a sewn on toggle clasp in my samples.
Needles and Notions
One pair U.S. 0 (3.25mm) needles Size B (2.25 mm) crochet hook Size 9 (1.15 mm) lace steel crochet hook for beading Darning needle
Gauge:
Approximately 7 repeats = 4 inches. It is a four stitch repeat Blocking and wear may affect this measurement. The silk is more flexible than the cotton when finished.
Abbreviations used in this pattern:
K -Knit P-Purl CO-Cast on stitches k2tog - Knit next two stitches together k3tog - Knit the next 3 stitches together ssk - Slip next two stitches knit wise, then knit them together through back of both loops. sl1 - slip one pw - purl wise yo - Yarn over yrh - yarn round crochet hook ch1 - chain one with crochet hook b1p - purl the next stitch, and bead that stitch as follows: Slip a bead onto the head of your small steel crochet hook, then carefully hook the knit stitch just made, slipping it off the right hand knitting needle, and slide the bead down over the stitch by pulling the stitch through the bead with the crochet hook. Replace the stitch on the right hand needle, and gently snug the stitch again. Instructions:
With U.s. 0 (3.25 mm) needles, C0 104 stitches (25 repeats plus 4 selvedge stitches) and if using a long tail cast on, leave a 20 " - 30 " tail to create an optional crochet extension chain for the toggle clasp. Row1: Knit row (w.s.) Row2: K2, \*K2, yo, ssk; repeat from \* to last 2 sts., K2 Row3: K2, P1, \*b1p, P3; repeat from \* to last 5 sts., b1p, P2, K2 Row4: K2, K2tog, \*yo, K1, yo, K3tog; repeat from \* to last 4 sts., yo, K1, yo, K2tog, K1 Row5:Knitrow
Turn for crochet bind off:
Note: To attach a pendant as you bind off (optional), follow the instructions below until you are working into the stitch over the center bead, the 13th from the end, and attach the pendant with a slip stitch, then continue on with the bind off. Using the size B (2.25 mm) hook in place of your right hand needle, and holding the yarn now as if to crochet, insert the hook p.w. into the 1"t st. removing from the left needle, ch1. \*sl3 pw onto hook, yrh, pull through those 3 sts., yrh, pullthrough 2 on hook, ch3, sl1 pw onto hook, yrh, pull through 1 st., yrh, pull through 2 on hook, ch3; repeat from \* to last 3 sts, sl3 pw onto hook, yrh, pull through 3 sts., yrh, pull through 2 on hook. Tie off end.
Finishing:
To create an extension "chain", use the tail from cast on, or attach a new thread to one side of the top (cast on edge) of the necklace. Begin by making a loop on hook, ch15, attach the metal hoop of the toggle clasp to the end of the chain length with a slip stitch, then \*ch3, sc into the 4th chain from the end; repeat from \* 3 times more, then tie off end. Darn in all ends and block firmly tilting the pins outward slightly to pullthe lace open. Attach a pendant if desired and not already done in the bind off.
