Instructions
Using 4.5mm circular needle cast on 197 [204, 211] sts. Row 1 (Right Side): K Continue in herringbone pattern as follows: Row 1 (Wrong Side): P Row 2: \*K2tog, K2, K into back of stitch below next stitch on left needle, leaving stitch above on left hand needle. K the next stitch on the left hand needle, K2. Rep from \* to last Stitch, K1. Row 3: P. Row 4: K3, K into the back of st below next st on left hand needle. K next st on left hand needle, K2, K2tog, \*K2, K into the back of st below next st on left hand needle, K next st on left hand needle, K2, K2tog. Rep from \* to end. These four rows form the herringbone patt. Change to 5mm circular needle.
Short skirt
Cont in patt until skirt measures 13 [18, 23] cm, ending with right side facing for next row. Long Skirt Cont in patt until skirt measures 61 [66, 71] cm, ending with right side facing for next row.
Both skirts
Place markers at both ends of last row. Change to 4.5mm circular needle. Cont in patt until skirt measures 12cm from markers, ending with right side facing for next row. Change to 4mm needle. Cont straight until skirt measures 15cm from markers, ending with right side facing for next row. Next row (right side): Patt 2 sts, cast off 3 sts to make buttonhole (on following row cast on 3 sts over these cast off gaps), patt to end. Work 7 rows in patt. Rep last 8 rows once more, ending with right side facing for next row. Next row (right side): Patt 2 sts, cast off 3 sts to make a buttonhole (on foll row cast on 3 sts over these cast off sts), patt to last 4 sts, cast off 2 sts to make buttonhole for underlay (cast on 2 sts over these cast offs on foll row), patt to end. Work a further 3 rows, ending with right side facing for next row. Cast off.
Making Up
Press carefully, using a warm iron over a damp cloth. Try on skirt and mark positions for buttons - the 3 larger ones on right side of left front, and smaller buttons on wrong side of right front. Sew on buttons.
