Holcomb Farm Scarf Designed by Beverly Army Williams Unite the Victorian look of hairpin lace with contemporary fibers for a luscious, modern scarf. This pattern provides instructions for three edging options. Approximately 52" x 5.5" before edging Gauge: approximately 5 loops/inch Supplies needed: 2 skeins Malabrigo silky merino (suggest one variegated, one solid) (DK, 150 yards/skein) Hairpin Lace loom, set at 2.25" Size G crochet hook 12 coil-less safety pins Aluminum foil Note: Hairpin lace patterns may measure loops differently. In this pattern, a loop count given indicates the loops on one post. Be sure to measure the same number of loops on each of the posts. In other words, if the pattern indicates to place marker after 50 loops, count the loops on the left and right posts and mark each post.
Directions:
Leaving a long (around 10") tail, cast on with yarn. Using sc as center stitch, make strip with 250 loops on each side. To keep track of stitch numbers, place coil-less pin on posts above every 5oth stitch. When strip is completed, leave a long tail (at least 10") and tie off through final sc stitch. Gently slide strip onto foil, folding the strip carefully as needed, then gently wrap foil around it. Doing this will allow you to keep the strips orderly and fresh while you continue to work on additional strips. Make two strips in solid yarn and one in variegated yarn.

Join in sets of two loops using herringbone method. Visit this web page for information on the order to join strips to offset the diagonal tendencies of HPL: http://www.stitchdiva.com/custom.aspx?id=74 At the final join for each set of strips, use a coil-less pin to hold the loose stitches in place. You'll want to tie them off, but wait! The next step will provide a more elegant solution. Using the color of your choice (I suggest the solid), sc across the top edge of the scarf. Catch the tails from the where you tied off the strip under the sc edging. When you reach the joins, remove the coil-less pins and sc through the loose loops, joining them. Trim the excesstails. SC across bottom edge, again catching tails from the cast on under the sc edging. SC across left edge, catching tails from top and bottom edges. Repeat on right side.
Edging:
Options for edging this scarf are only limited by your imagination. To get you started, instructions for robust fringe, spare fringe, and crocheted picot are included. Robust Fringe (shown on Page 1): Decide on length of fringe; I used about 12". Cut 28 lengths in solid and 14 lengths in variegated (or all solid, or all variegated). Note: I usually find a book with the circumference I need and wind the yarn around it until I have enough. Cut along one short edge, and presto! Fringe! Hold three strands of yarn (two solid, one variegated) together. Fold in half. Insert hook through sc stitch on short end of scarf. Place folded yarn over hook. Pull through stitch, then gently pull yarn tails through the loop. Tug with care to tighten. ≥ times: once at each edge, once at each join, and once at each strip center Spare Fringe:

low the Robust Fringe instructions, but use one strand of fringe for each Crocheted Picot Edge:

To make this dainty edging, attach working yarn by pulling up through first sc on a short edge and creating a sc. Chain 3, sc in original sc, then across the next two sts. \*sc, ch3, sc in inal sc. sc 2\*g u ber Gnumr D) be mr orrgmur be, enenr terobb tne ene two bebr Be, eno) Original sc, sc 2\* Weave in ends.
