Herringbone Cowl Pattern by Lauren Osborne (as of January 20, 2011)

Yarn: 1 skein Manos del Uruguay Silk Blend (I used every bit of that skein, so if you are concerned about running out of yarn, you may want to buy two.) Materials: 1 16" Us8 circular needle, tapestry needle Gauge: 20 stitches to 3" in stitch pattern given for the cowl. It is important that you swatch in this pattern because the slipped stitches will pull things in quite a bit! Finished Measurements: 6" tall x 21" around
Notes:
\*yfwd = bring the yarn forward between the needles as if to purl \*ybk = bring the yarn back between the needles as if to knit \*All slipped stitches are to be slipped as if to purl. That is to say that you just slide them from the left needle on to the right without twisting the stitches. Cast on 128 stitches and join for knitting in the round, being careful not to twist and placing a marker at the beginning of the round. Rounds 1 and 5: \*k2, yfwd, sl2, ybk; repeat from \* to the end of the round. Rounds 2 and 6: k1, \*k2, yfwd, sl2, ybk; repeat from \* to 3 sts before the end of the round, k2, yfwd, sl1. Rounds 3 and 7: (with the yarn still forward from the previous round) \*sl2, ybk, k2. yfwd; repeat from \* to the end of the round. Rounds 4 and 8: k1, \*yfwd, sl2, ybk, k2; repeat from \* to 3 sts before the end of the round, yfwd, sl2, ybk, k1. Rounds 9 and 13: \*yfwd, sl2, ybk, k2; repeat from \* to the end of the round. Rounds 10 and 14: yfwd, sll, ybk \*k2, yfwd, sl2, ybk; repeat from \* to 3 sts before the end of the round, k2, yfwd, sll. Rounds 11 and 15: ybk, \*k2, yfwd, sl2, ybk; repeat from \* to the end of the round. Rounds 12 and 16: k1, \*yfwd, sl2, ybk, k2; repeat from \* to 3 sts before the end of the round, yfwd, sl2, ybk, k1. Repeat these 16 rows until cowl measures about 6" tall, or until desired height is reached. Bind off. My preferred bind off for this cowl is Elizabeth Zimmerman's sewn bind off because it is nice and stretchy.
