OHBOY Hat Pattern: A Quick Knit Black-and-White Accessory Inspired by the German Film 'A Coffee in Berlin'

Pattern illustration

OHBOY is a German tragicomedy film about a twentysomething guy in Berlin. It's one of my favorite movies and its completely in black-and-white. In 2014, the film was released in the US under the title "A Coffee in Berlin". It tells the story of Niko, a guy who has dropped out of law school, failed to inform his father of that fact, and yet still accepts the father's funding for the schooling that no longer exists. The film presents a day or so in the life of Niko, as he careens from one absurd interaction to another, clearly floundering, but still not seeing that it is up to him to create the life he wants. So maybe if you go for this pattern, go for this stunning Germanmovie as well! The OHBOY hat is a super-quick gift and can be knit in one day, so did I in black-and-white. The style works for boys and girls, men and women, as long as you choose your color combination carefully. This beanie is a combination of an unicolored brim and crown with two-colored brioche stitch pattern in between. Straight brioche knitting will give you some mindless knitting. I decided to knit a simple but unusual crown. I'm sure, you will enjoy it. Pattern is written for three circumference small, medium and large to fit the child (8-12 y) and average adult female and male. When applicable, directions for S/ M,L sizes are written in parentheses as follows: S (M,L). 15"(16,5", 18")/ 38cm (42, 46cm)

Altogether approximately 165 (185, 210) yards / 150 (170, 190m) of DK weight yarn for the shown fitted version.

The hat is worked in the round from the bottom up ( brim to crown) beginning with a plain brioche ribbing in the round. Work two-color brioche pattern rounds in color indicated (MC or CC). Do not break yarn between rounds, simply drop the previous color leaving it in front and pick up the new one without crossing yarns. If you are counting rounds, count only the stitches going up on the knit column. You have to work 4 rounds, 2 with each color, to count 2 rounds. I recommend Nancy Marchant's classes and wonderful books on brioche knitting. Her online class offers more information on the intriguing brioche technique. Using MC and 16" circular needle, cast on 60 sts (72,84 sts) using the Twisted German CO method. Turn work, continue working on this side for the set-up row. Set-up row: Using MC yarn, wyif, \*sl1yo, p1\* rep to end of row, pm and join in round, being careful not to twist stitches and to keep the yarn over the first slipped stitch
