An impressive look with only a 4 row repeat. Not bad, eh? Can be made up in hardly any time at all-- so long as you keep at it! No huge commitment... fairly mindless but certainly not boring! The split personality refers to the sets' duo versatility! Perfect gift for a couple (without looking too matchy-matchy) since it becomes different with just a simple yarn change.
Gather your Stuff
Size 9 needles for the Scarf & Size 8 circular needles (16 in) for the Hat Gauge - not vital - besides would you really swatch? 1 skein Noro Kureyon Sock Yarn - 100 grams - 420 meters (with yarn leftover) Finished Scarf: Before Blocking: 5 $\textcircled{1}\%^{\prime\prime}\!\!\times\!\!45^{\prime\prime}$ Blocked: $7^{\prime\prime}\!\times\!45^{\prime\prime}$ Hat fits a woman's head loosely. Terms Definitions: $k f b=k\mathsf{n i t}$ in front and back of stitch $\mathsf{p w}=$ purl wise $\mathsf{s l}=\mathsf{s l i p}$ sts $=$ stitches tbl $=$ through back loop wf $=$ wool forward
Scarf
To begin the adventure: With size 9 needles, CO 36 Sts. Knit one row. Now start the main pattern rows as follows: Row 1: (RS) K3, knit to last 3 sts, wf, sl 3 pw. Row 2: (Ws) K3, \*k2tog, rep from \* across to last 3 sts, wf, sl 3 pw. Row 3: (Rs) K3, \*kfb, rep from \* across to last 3 sts, wf, sl 3 pw. Row 4: (wS) K3, purl to last 3 sts, wf, sl 3 pw. Repeat these 4 rows until desired length. End on a row 3(RS). Work row 1, three times then cast off (should be on RS row). Weave in (2) ends. To block or not? Blocking isn't a necessity but makes for a nice look...not any better...just a bit different ...and this is about variety, right?
Hat
Now get busy and knit the hat, it matches the scarf perfectly so you'll end up with a lovely set! With size 8 circular (16 inch) Cast on 80 stitches and join being mindful not to twist. Place marker to designate beginning of round.
For ribbing:
k1tbl, p1, repeat around, end with p1. Work for 1 inch or desired rib length.
Body of Hat
Round 1: Knit. Round 2: P2 tog around. Round 3: Kfb around. Round 4: Knit. Work rounds 1 - 4 until approximately 8 inches from beginning or desired length. End having just worked a round 1, then work round 2. (40 sts) Cut thread, leaving approx. 24 inch length. Draw thread through stitches and pull up taut, secure by bringing thread through stitches firmly, finish off by weaving in ends. Done! So here's an option that enhances the multi-tasking get it done part: Cast on with 2 different yarns onto one circular needle and knit away. Noro Sock Yarn for the Decidedly Delicate $\sim$ Valley Yarns Northampton for the Dapperly Dashing. (Works well for a gal/guy couple gift) You might have to be a tad bit mindful not to have the two yarns get into a tangle party, though not a big issue just wanted to make mention. It's fun to knit with two different weights of yarn AND with different colors on the same project...shocking, I know. This makes for more exciting less likely to get bored with that color you loved but...syndrome...you get the picture... \*\*Yet another suggestion: It's good practice to have 2 scarves on one circular needle in progress for those need to just knit moments...so keep it handy. I generally have two on one circular going next to my chair to grab .. as needed.
