te atatu (the dawn)
A knitting pattern designed by Rachel Evans

When I first saw the ball of Gradient yarn featured in this pattern, it screamed "sunrise". Te atatu means "the dawn," and I wanted to design a shawl that looked like the dawn of a new day. The contrast of the night sky fading away pairs with picot edging as the sun finally burst through. The design suits gradient yarn, mini skein sets and solid/semisolidyarn.
Construction
Te atatu is a crescent shaped shawl comprised of a striking, yet simple, lace mesh interspersed with garter sections of decreasing depth and finishing with a picot cast off.

Picot cast off
Make sure you allow enough yarn for the cast off. Mine used approx 6g. If you have more yarn left that you would like to use before the cast off then repeat rows 20 and 21 once or twice more in your main colour, then cast off. Change to MC. Cast off 3 stitches, \*return stitch from right needle back to left needle, cable cast on 3 stitches, cast off 8 stitches. Repeat from \* until 3 stitches remain, co 3, cast off 6.
Finishing
Pull yarn through last stitch and weave in ends. Block your shawl (in the techniques section there is a link to Truly Myrtle's blog with a good explanation of how to block a shawl) I block my shawls this way but I do add a blocking wire across the top as the lace in this shawl needs lots of stretching out when blocking.
