Rachel Shawl
Design by Anna Novitzky, Zombie Kitten Knits (zombiekittenknits.blogspot.com)

An elegant semi-circular shawl in variegated teal, knitted from the centre-neck edge outwards. A star-textured centre section fans out into fir-cone lace, finishing with a geometric eyelet-based lace edging ornamented with nupps. Designed for Rachel on the occasion of her wedding.

Finished measurements: Dependent on gauge. Shown here: 150 cm (59") along neck edge, 60 cm (23.5") from centre neck to point. Yarn: Sweet Clement Besotted (80% superwash blue-faced Leicester, 20% silk; 800 m [875 yd]/100g; Teal): 1 skein. Gauge: Not critical. Shown here, in 2 repeats x 2 repeats of fir-cone lace (21 st x 30 rows of chart 1), 8 cm x 9 cm. See Chart 1 or fir-cone lace instructions under Special stitches. Tools and notions: 3.5mm circular needle Darning or tapestry needle Abbreviations: CO = cast on k = knit kfb = knit into stitch, then knit through the front loop of the same stitch — increases 1 stitch k2tog = right-leaning decrease: knit 2 together p = purl pm = place marker p7tog = purl 7 together RS = right side sl = slip stitch purlwise sl1, k2tog, pss0 = centred double decrease: slip 1, knit 2 together, pass slipped stitch over sm = slip marker ssk = left-leaning decrease: slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over st = stitch(es) WS = wrong side yo = yarn over Special stitches: 7-stitch nupp: working very loosely, ([k1, p1] 3 times, k1) allinto the same stitch. On the next row, purl all 7 stitches together, leaving 1 stitch and a bobble, or nupp. If you find it hard to purl all 7 together, you can just slip the first 6 stitches over the last stitch and purl that one. 3/3 star: k3tog, yo, k3tog into same stitches again. 2/2 star: k2tog, p2tog into same stitches again. Fir-cone lace (multiple of 10 stitches +1; 16 rows): Rows 9, 11, 13, 15: k2tog, (k3, yo, k1, yo, k3, sl1, k2tog, psso) to last 9 st, k3, yo, k1, yo, k3, ssk.

Continue as set, increasing with a yo at the start and end of each segment on every second right-side row, and increasing the number of repeats of the fir-cone lace pattern by one every 8 right-side rows, keeping the centred decreases and the k1 between the yos in line as set. Note that every few repeats, there is not quite enough room to expand the repeats completely; do so anyway, keeping the pattern centred and missing off the relevant number of stitches at the ends of the row until the stitch count has increased enough to accommodate them. This will result in extra increases on some rows; this is intentional. Continue in this manner to row 95, which will be worked as follows: Row 95: sl1, k2, \*yo, k4, work row 7 of fir-cone lace with 8 repeats, k1, yo, sm, k1, sm, repeat from \* three more times, k3.
