Baby Frou-Frou Preemie Hat
@OneLoopShy Designs Even the tiniest baby girl needs a little froufrou! This hat is super stretchy, thanks to the yarn, and super quick to make. Finished Size: 12" around, 3.25" tall Yarn: 1 ball Cascade Fixation, 98% cotton, 2% elastic, 100 yards, [50 g] Gauge: 5 sts and 4 rows = approx. 1" in hdc Hook: size D (3.25mm) Special Stitches: hdc inc (make two hdc into one stitch); dc shell (make 5 dc into one stitch) Notes: do not count the chain 2 start to each round as a stitch. When joining, join with slip stitch in the first hdc of the round. Do not turn at the end of each round (except when making the shell border). Round 1: Chain 2, make 7 hdc in 2nd chain from hook (or make 7 hdc in a magic ring). Join with a sl st in first hdc. Ch 2, do not turn. Round 2: make 3 hdc into each stitch around (21 hdc) and join with a sl st in the first hdc. Ch 2, do not turn. Round 3: make 2 hdc into each stitch around (42 hdc) and join with a sl st in the first hdc. Ch 2, do not turn. Round 4: \*hdc in 6 stitches, hdc inc in next stitch\* repeat around (48 hdc). Join with sl st in first hdc. Ch 2, do not turn. \*\*fyt the crown of the hat is the size you want.\*\*\*\* Rounds 5 - 14: hdc around, join with sl st in first hdc, ch 2, do not turn At the end of round 14, join with a slip stitch, DO NOT CHAIN and . . . wait for it . . . TURN! (we are breaking the protocol, but by turning, the front side of the shells will show when the brim is rolled up). Round 15: \*skip 2 st, make a shell (5 dc) in next st, sk 2 st, sl st in next stitch\* around (8 shells). Ta da . . . fasten off.
To make the frou-frou:
Make a magic ring, chain 9, sl st in 2nd chain from hook and in remaining 7, sl st into magic ring (one frou made), make 10 more in the same fashion (chaining out, slip stitching back, slip stitching into ring), varying the number of chains between 6 - 10. Fasten off leaving a 3" tail. Tighten the magic ring as tight as you can. Sew the frou-frou SECURELY to the top of the hat, making sure to finish off on the outside of the hat (no knots or bumps next to your little one's head!)
