Herringbone Princess
By Bethany Hick
So like everyone else I saw the shawl that the new Duchess of Cambridge wore to the market, and decided I want that. Not the “spend a few hundred on a designer shawl" want, but to make my own. Knowing my problems with stopping halfway through if I am stuck with making edges, I decided to help myself out by making ruffles as I go. I hope everyone enjoys this and keep in mind this is my first pattern. Feel free to send me any errors you find (especially in the written directions)
Before you start
Weigh your yarn. It will take half of youryarnto completethe last two sides of the shawl.
Make First Ruffle
CO 20 using Invisible Cast On (the first onelisted http://www.eunnyjang.com/knit/2006/03/ majoring_in_lace_part_iv.html) Row 1: K20 Row 2: MR Row 3: K20
Set Up Row
Row 4: K20, PU 3 St from Side of Ruffle (looks best if you K Tbl), PU 20 St from the invisible Cast On, Remove the extra yarn as you go.

Body
Work Charts 1(you've already worked row 1) and 2. When making stitches on the RS I use the pattern left, right, left, right styles, and on the WS right, left, right, left because when you start making a stitch every row a line will form and this keep it on the WS of the shawl. The charts only show the center area of the shawl you will also be working 20 sts in garter st on both sides making ruffles at the beginning of the rows indicated on chart with an &. You may want to add stitch markers at the center and sides of your shawl. If you are using the written directions to garter stitch directions are included. On Chart 2 work the highlighted area on the chart twice. Alternate charts 3 and 4 to create the rest of the body. Please note that now you are increasing stitches on the WS as well. The first time through the Chart 3 you will repeat the area highlighted 3 times, and two additional times each time Chart 3 is repeated (i.e., 3, 5, 7, 9 repeats). The first time through the chart you will repeat the area highlighted 4 times, and two additional times each time Chart 4 is repeated (i.e., 4, 6, 8, 10 repeats) You can end on either chart 3 or 4. You will want to leave a little more than half of your yarn for the final two sides of the ruffles. I would recommend reaching 15 inches of herringbone pattern at the centerback.DONOTBREAKYOURYARN!
Edge
You will now be making your final two edges of ruffles. To do this you are going to ssk last stitch of your border with a stitch from the row of the center of your shawl (except when MCR). Along the tops of Charts 3 and 4 there is an indicator of whenaruffle shouldbemadewhile working your way across the final two edges. Try and keep your gauge tight through this final section or you may run out of yarn.

Row 8: K20 Row 9: MCR Row 10: K20 Row 11:MR Row 12: K20 Repeat Rows 3 through 6 starting with Row 5 if you ended the center of the shawl using Chart 3. Work until you are 1 St from the left side ruffles.
Row 10: MCR
Finishing
At this point you should have the 20 sts of your original side ruffle and 20sts that just completed thecorner ruffle.Youshould now join the two together using the kitchener stitch method. Block your shawl. I would recommend blocking the center area fairly hard to bring out the stitch pattern. Row 6: Sl1P, K20 Row 7: K(18), Sl1P, yf, turn Row 8: Sl1P, K(18) Work Rows 7 and 8 eight more times, decreasing the number in parenthesis by two each repeat with the last repeat having Row 7 and 8 K2 Row 9: K2, [Sl1P Pu St wrapped around Sl st move Sl St and Pu St back to left needle and K2tog, K1] 8 times, Sl1P Pu St wrapped around Sl st move SI St and Pu St back to left needle and K2tog, Sl2P (one of which is from the body) Pu St wrapped around Sl St from the body move Sl St and Pu St back to left needle and K2tog, Sl St from the border over k2tog.
