ROLLING RVERS SCARF
Current's Edge by Bonnie Dean My original, bold cable and lace stitch pattern mirrors the feel of Montana, where I live and play. The scarf is worked in Mountain Colors Mountain Goat from Corvallis, Montana, and is framed with the multicolored palette of Mountain Colors Merino Ribbon. Cast (on) and find your fish in a slow pocket of a riffle.

Bottom Ribbing: CO 34 sts with MC yarn. Row 1 (RS): P1, k4, p2, (k4, p4) twice, k4, p2, k4, p1. Row 2 (WS): K1, p4, k2, (p4, k4) twice, p4, k2, p4, k1. Drop MC, and with CC knit one row. Next row: Cont with CC and rep Row 2. Next row: Cont with CC and rep Row 1. Drop CC, and with MC work in est rib pat 2 rows. Cont in MC and work set up (WS) row: K1, p4, k2, p20, k2, p4, k1. Work Rolling Rivers Chart OR equivalent written instructions 12 times. Rep rows 1-25 one more time. Top Ribbing: Row 1 (WS): Cont with MC, K1, p4, k2, (p4, k4) twice, p4, k2, p4, k1. Row 2 (RS): P1, k4, p2, (k4, p4) twice, k4, p2, k4, p1. Drop MC and with CC purl one row. Cont with CC and rep Top Ribbing Row 2 then Row 1. With MC work 3 rows in est rib pat. BO in pat. Weave in ends. Block lace open (optional). Intarsia edge (optional) method to "frame" scarf in CC: Right Side Border: With MC and beg at right lower corner, pick up 316 sts evenly along right edge of scarf at a rate of about 3 sts per 4 rows, AND at the same time picking up sts so that first and last 2 pick up sts on each end correspond to MC on scarf body and the 3rd and 4th pick up sts on each end correspond to the CC stripes on scarf. Technical Tip: As in all intarsia, lift new working yarn under old working yarn to prevent a hole at every color change. This applies to all the color changes in the picked up edges. Row 1 (WS): P2 with MC, join CC and purl to last 2 sts. Join a new MC yarn source, p2. Row 2 (RS): K2 with MC, with CC k2, p4, \*k4, p4; rep from\* to last 4 sts, k2, then with MC, k2. Row 3: Cont with MC, p2, with CC p2, k4, \*p4, k4: rep from\* to last 4 sts, p2, then with MC, p2. With MC alone, work in est rib pat 3 more rows. BO in pat. Left Side Border: With MC and beg at left upper corner of scarf, pick up 316 sts evenly along left edge of scarf in the same fashion as the right edge. Rep ribbing instructions from Right Side Border. BO in pat. Non-intarsia edge method (CC spanning top edge to bottom edge instead of forming a "frame"): Right Side Border: With MC and beg at right lower corner, pick up 316 sts evenly along right edge of scarf at a rate of about 3 sts per 4 rows. Row 1 (WS): With MC, purl. Row 2 (RS): With CC, k4, p4, \*k4, p4; rep from\* to last 4 Sts, k4. Row 3: Cont with CC, p4, k4,\*p4, k4; rep from\* to last 4 sts, p4. Work in est rib pat one more row with CC. With MC, work 3 rows in est rib pat. BO in pat. Left Side Border: With MC and beg at left upper corner of scarf, pick up 316 sts evenly along left edge of scarf in the same fashion as the right edge. Repeat ribbing instructions for Right Side Border, non-intarsia method. BO in pat. Finishing: Weave in ends. Block to finished dimensions.

Bonnie Dean
Bonnie Dean became a TKGA Master Knitter in April 2015. She lives in Billings, MT with her husband Edward. Their Boulder, CO son Gavin introduced Bonnie to the knowledge of Chief Left Hand, a Southern Arapaho Chief who lived in the mid-1800's near Boulder. She launched her company Chief Left Hand Knits in February 2014, incorporating her love of hand knitting and her longstanding love of decorative and fine arts of Native American artists along with the beauty of the spaces around Boulder where Chief Left Hand wintered. Bonnie is enjoying applying her experience in fabric-based garment construction and design to a new medium. Her designs focus on modern embellishment, texture and cables.
